Quiet is a way to sum up this week. As Stacey pointed out in her post (It's good to have Stacey on board) it doesn't look like we have anything of any significance on the horizon. As I see it, the biggest story this week is a return to cold. Highs near or struggling to get to 20 and lows near 10 or single digits. I love snow and winter but I am ready for Spring.
Here's an interesting stat, we've had 34 straight days with measurable snow on the ground, and still counting. The average snow depth has been around 6 inches. The lowest amount was from the 5th to the 11th of January which we had 5 inches or less on the ground.
Not surprised by those stats. It feels like forever since i've seen the bare ground. I wonder what percentage of the period from Dec 1st to current has had at least 1" of snow on the ground. I bet it's quite high, as our periods of thaw where bare ground was widespread didn't last very long before snow returned in short order.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i'm with you on being ready for spring, Brian. It's been a long, cold, and snowy winter (albeit not particularly "stormy"). We had our one opportunity for a sizable synoptic snowstorm, and unfortunately it didn't materialize for us. So, now that we're into February, the days are getting longer, the snow will begin to have a harder time sticking on cars and blacktop during the daylight hours, I say we just get a nice thaw and reign in spring already. It's go big or go home, now. The nickel and dime stuff kept the nice, winter feel, but it's officially over stayed its welcome. If we're not going to get a whopper of a storm, bring on Sunny and 60 degrees.
Spring sounds nice but it's still only feb 7th. a lot can still happen. Remember "as the days grow longer, the storms grow stronger". Some of Rochester's biggest snowstorms have come in March. Plus, I want to see Rochester hit 100" this year. Once we do that then bring on spring.
ReplyDeleteI am not giving up on Winter, I am just saying seeing a little more sunshine feeling a little warmer wouldn't be a bad thing. - Brian
ReplyDeleteI second that, Brian. I'm a hard core winter enthusiast, BUT right now I can't wait to smell the sweet smells of spring. Can't wait to walk through Highland Park just as the lilacs are beginning to burst with life. It's an amazing time of year to see nature at it's finest.
ReplyDeleteBrian,
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at your accumulation map above, and looking at the latest radar trends and then looking at the latest GFS and NAM, I can see EXACTLY how you came up with that. Looks like slightly heavier snow is going to funnel up into the Genesee Valley later this evening and overnight, with lighter amounts toward Buffalo. Good call! I wouldn't mind a couple more inches to wake up to tomorrow morning, as long as it's gonna stay cold.
Thank you but I will confess I looked at the info, this was Scott's map from last night and saw no reason to change it. When a forecast is good you let it ride. (and sometimes when it isn't good *cough cough*) -Brian
ReplyDeleteThe NWS out of Buffalo has 2-4 tonight and 2-4 tomorrow. Would this be Advisory criteria snow.
ReplyDeletePattern change next week??????????????????
ReplyDeleteLess than one inch to go and Rochester hits 90". Not to bad considering its only early February. 100" should be fairly easy to get to unless winter shuts off on February 28th like it did last year. But I feel like the odds of that happening two winters in a row are low.
ReplyDeleteI should also note that by this time tomorrow, Rochester should have already EXCEEDED the total snowfall for ALL of last winter.
ReplyDeleteDid it shut down on Feb. 28th last year? I have records of hiring a plow guy on March 8th of last year....I only hire plowing when it is WAY too thick for my daycare parents to get in and out of my driveway because any other time I wait for my husband to do it after his work.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think a lot of us are exhausted with the fact of missing storm after storm. For us enthusiests, it's emotionally draining!
I'm with DK...it's go big or go home!!
According to this link, only a Trace of snow was recorded for the entire month of March last winter. Although, those records are kept at the Rochester airport. As we all know living in Western New York, the weather can be very different from one location to the next:

That is so true DK...Rochester has been getting a ton more snow than us in the southerntier this season. Maybe last March was a time that we got hammered and Rochester was spared.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe that plow receipt was dated wrong...just took a look at accuweather and the recorded temp for March 8th 2010 was 49 degrees...so that doesn't add up.
ReplyDeleteDk what is JB saying now about his moronic statements last week? I only ask you because you brought it to the attention of this blog. He was so off base it is scary. Not even a storm coming Thursday. The other question is why is Stacey with news 8. Is Bob still working there or did they just hire another person? I think it wold be nice to know what is happening.
ReplyDeleteJB couldn't have been any more wrong. Two words describe the weather across the east this week: "non-event".

Ahhhh, a snow lover who doesn't shovel snow---it's easy to love on those terms. Get out there and break your back. Then tell me you love it.
When do you expect the snow to start?
ReplyDeleteOh dont worry we do our fair share of shoveling here . Just saying we usually only plow when we get big snows. We still love the snow just the same ...sore back and all !
ReplyDeleteI lift with my legs, not my back. Bend at the knees is the key. No back aches here. I'm sorry about your back pain, though. I hope it gets better.

Thank you, very kind. It's pretty much hopeless though--the only "cure" is no snow--that's why I have come to hate snow. After ~40 years I've tried everything--one of those curvy snow shovels does help some. Constant trips to the chiropractor also helps but that gets annoying.
Anyway you snow lovers (actually it's beyond love)on here have to be counter- balanced by someone who represents the majority out there, so I took the responsibility (Hee Hee).
Enjoy your snow--I hope it melts.
Hey Scott, you've been hinting at a warm up in a week or so (as has NWS) how significant will this be? One or two days of 38, or something that will do some good and really melt some of this mess? 4 or 5 days of above freezing would sure be nice. Do you see anything like that coming?
ReplyDeleteOne of the guys that lives a few houses down my street has a "Tim the Tool Man Taylor" strength snow blower. That thing power blows even the heaviest snow and ice off his driveway. I'll have to find out where he got it and pass it along on here. That thing works amazing over the shovel.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, when I say snow "blower" I literally mean it is like a hand held leaf blower. It just takes one arm to walk around and swing the thing side to side as the snow flies off the driveway. Coolest thing ever. I get the feeling he rigged the power on it, thus the "Tim Taylor" reference. lol.
ReplyDeleteWhere is everyone have a little snow fallen now.
ReplyDeletenot that anyone is on, but.... rochester has had heavy snow all evening. I have about 5" new snow here in Northern Monroe County, just north of KRoc in W. Irondequoit and it is still comin' down heavy. About 1/4- 1/8 vis. right now here on the south ont. lake shore. Funny how things turn out. This will be bigger than the 'big one'!! LOL. I see Lake Response on radar. Even over frozen Lake Erie. We could end up w/ 8 inches or even more!!! rochesterdave
