SIGNIFICANT LAKE SNOWS WEST FRIDAY NIGHT

Written By: Scott Hetsko
The areas first lake snowfall will arrive late in the afternoon Friday and continue into Saturday morning. A cold front will cross the area Friday morning, there will be a few quiet hours in the afternoon before the snow begins in earnest after 4p.m. Friday. Delta T's between the lake and 5,000 feet will be about 20C, plenty to induce a response from Lake Erie. A persistent single band of snow will make for difficult travel for Genesee, Wyoming and possibly Livingston and Southwest Monroe County Friday night and early Saturday. Winds will increase to over 25 mph at times resulting in blowing and drifting of snow in these areas. 6-12" is possible in the most persistent snow bands.

  1. what about Saturday with the line off of Lake Ontario... NWS is talking about it getting pushed further south... maybe along the north shore of Wayne County?

  2. I agree with that forecast. Boundary layer winds back to the Northwest on Saturday which would cause the Ontario band to dip South. A 500mb vort max may also enhance snow for a time in Northern Monroe and Wayne County on Saturday.

  3. Scott,
This setup appears similar to the surprise lake Erie band that slipped farther north during the rush hour and caught travelers in Rochester off guard last December. Boundary layer winds were quite similar. Couple that with potential cyclonic curvature induced by lake Erie's heat, as was the case with last year's surprise, and it might get briefly intense even right in the City.

  4. Even if you take out all lake effect possibilities for Rochester, do we still look to have measurable snow between Friday and Sunday?

  5. Scott, I have family coming up to Rochester from Springville, NY (S'ern Erie county). They are planning to return on Saturday morning. How are conditions looking in the Springville, NY area early Saturday?

  7. It does not matter. It will be melted and gone by next Tuesday with the next storm passing to our West. It gets somewhat cold for a day or two before the next storms passes to our West.
