TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY LOWEST IN 30 YEARS!
Written by: Bob Metcalfe
I came across an interesting article that discussed the current tropical cyclone activity in the northern hemisphere and across the globe.
People can off the top of their head recall the devastating year of 2005, the year of Wilma, Katrina, and several other strong storms. But since then, the Atlantic basin, and the rest of the world for that matter have seen a pronounced drop in activity.
The Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index for the years 1974-now are illustrated above. You can see a clear drop since 2005 to levels not seen for over 30 years.
So why the lack of activity? The article suggests that a 2+ year dramatic La Nina episode may have something to do with a cooling of the Earth's climate recently.
An interesting read if you are a fan of tropical weather... you can see the full article published by Florida State University by clicking here.
