YANKS NEW STADIUM HOME RUN DERBY: WEATHER RELATED?
Written by: Bob Metcalfe
If you're a Yankees fan (like our very own Scott Hetsko) you have obviously noticed the "home run derby" that has been taking place at the new stadium. One of the earliest ideas to describe this phenomenon actually was pinned on weather.
The belief was that the new stadium caused a "micro-climate" where winds were pushing from behind the trajectory of the ball towards the outfield walls, giving the balls a little extra "push". They also attempted to study the overall weather pattern to see if the prevailing winds just happened to be in a favorable direction (again, from behind the ball, not against it.) No real data has come forward to substantiate these claims. But there may be a good reason after all.
The picture above shows the differences between old and new Yanks stadiums. It appears that the shape, distance, and height of the walls are all more favorable for homers to be hit.
It's a great article to read (click here)... we hope you enjoy, even if you do like the Red Sox!
