SUMMER'S OVER, ALMOST OFFICIALLY!

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

It's scary isn't it? Fall starts tomorrow. On my way to work today I saw two trees that had more red leaves than any other color.

So this would be a proper time to discuss the autumnal equinox. What makes Fall is the transition from days that are 12 hours or more to days with less than 12 hours of light. The equinox means that the day features exactly 12 hours of sunlight.

Now as you can expect, the temperatures quickly decline from this point forward, although Friday says otherwise. A well-developed southwest wind will crank our numbers up to the (likely) warmest temperatures we'll see until next spring. Right now, I would say that 85 is almost a given for all areas, but 88-90 isn't out of reach either! The record for Rochester on Friday is 90 degrees. Can we get a record temp out of it?

Also of note: The tropics. African waves, the seeds of tropical storms, continue to pump across the southern Atlantic and will run into favorable areas for tropical development for the next two weeks at least. Also, the Gulf of Mexico could spawn some activity. Igor won't be the only hurricane making headlines this year I feel.

  1. Scary? No. Awsome, yes!
As I get older, The more I witness the awe inspiring workings of our planet.
I love the warmth and long days of summer, and when I embrace the rythm of nature, the seasons, and the beauty of it all, it's easier to accept the cold, shorter days.
