FIRST FROZEN PRECIP?!

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

Well, it's starting to get real folks. A surge of cold is coming tonight that will bring a very real possibility for wet snow flakes or graupel in areas late Thursday/early Friday. NO! There won't be any major accumulations, but hill tops in the southern tier, and places like Bristol will likely see some wet snow on the ground very early Friday morning.

At left is the 850 mb temps for 12z (7am) Friday. We are well into the -5 to -10 degree Celsius range. That's more than enough for a little bit of a mix to occur in areas 1200-1500 feet above sea level during this time of the year. It's a brief window, and the following days will actually warm up very nicely, but this is exactly what we should be getting used to for this winter: La Nina typically brings strong-willed swings of cold air followed by modest warm-ups etc.
