2007 Hurricane Season Should Be Busy!

For the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA scientists predict 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to 10 becoming hurricanes, of which three to five could become major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. An average Atlantic hurricane season brings 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes, including two major hurricanes.

El Nino, and it's stronger upper level Westerlies, diverted many storms away from the United States last summer. With La Nina taking it's place this summer, Westerly winds should be weaker meaning more Hurricanes making landfall this season. Only time will tell!

  1. So how accurate is the NOAA in predicting how many huuicanes will develop in a hurricane season? Seems like a tough prediction!

  2. It's a very tough prediction. They look at several different factors in determining a forecast. We know that we're in the middle of a cycle that produces a higher number of tropical systems. This year, El Nino is weaker so steering winds are more favorable this summer over the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. For this and many other reasons, we expect a prolific storm season!
