This week is Severe Weather Awareness week in Western New York. Let's talk about things you can do to insure your safety whenever severe weather strikes! Before a storm, develop a plan for you and your family at home, school, work. When outdoors, identify in advance a safe place to seek shelter. Conduct frequent drills. Know what action you will take when a warning is issued. Know the name of your County! Warnings are issued on a County basis. You can always log onto our website for the latest warnings!
If a Tornado Warning is issued, move immediately to a place of safely, preferably a basement or interior room away from windows. Get as low to the ground as possible. Cover your head. If caught outside and a tornado threatens, lie flat in a ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Flying debris causes the most fatalities and injuries during a tornado. Your chances of remaining safe during severe weather are greatest if you follow these safety rules.
