MORE RAIN THAN SNOW?

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

Is it a blessing or is it a curse? While its true we will see "nasty" weather by the middle of the week, it looks like a major snow event it will not be.

The latest forecast data, with the included image depicting Wednesday morning, shows the center of the storm passing just west of our area. This would line us up in the "warm sector" of the storm, which at worst could mean a mix of precipitation at times, with minimal opportunity for pure snow to fall.

Still plenty of time for things to change, but it looks more and more convincing that this will be a rain/wind event for the most part. Speaking of wind, this guy could pack quite a punch. I wouldn't be surprised if advisories accompany this storm.

Now behind it we can expect a cool down, but this isn't the ideal path for harsh cold. Lake effect will likely set up behind this as well, but we have to wait on the wind direction to see where those bands could set up. A northwest wind would typically bring a multi-band setup to our area, which could mean a few areas seeing snow across the lakeshore. But if you live in Wayne county, this could be your first decent lake-effect foray of the year.

Expect to hear lots more about this storm as we approach it.

  1. I knew it. When the NWS said mostly snow for WNY yesterday, I was thinking, "yeah, right..too good to be true". And I was right. I hate this winter so far.

  2. I never listen to the NWS. They are usually wrong. You will have to go out West to see good snow. I know it is early, but this looks like a pattern all too familiar. Why these storms keep going to our West is a big question?????? Lake Effect is boring because most of us do not see it. Oh well. Bring on Spring!!!!!

  3. hmmm...another cutter system to our west. Sound familiar from winters past? What it's going to take to get a pure snow storm around here, I don't know. And when it is cold enough for pure snow...the storm will pass too far to our south and east. Oh well, there's always lake effect...Oh wait, that won't happen either because the winds will be WSW to W. Let the snow drought continue.

  4. Bob / Scott / Brian,

Any chance of lake effect developement on a NW wind occuring after this storm? All I hear about is the strong west winds that might pound Buffalo Wednesday night / Thursday....again.

  5. Ya, I was just telling a friend I was depressed Sunday, then after I saw Bob's report at 6 or 11 or whatever, I hated him! And I don't even ski. It's just so boring and gray . . .
