LOTS TO LEARN FROM A SATELITTE IMAGE
Written By: Scott Hetsko
Finally we've had a day with little or no clouds which means we can get a great snapshot of what we look like from space! Above is a visible satellite image take Friday afternoon. Meteorologists LOVE the visible satellite image because it provides the truest picture of current weather. You can see where I've highlighted the ice still left on about half of Lake Erie. Notice how the deeper Lake Ontario is ice free. Only Erie freezes most Winters, this usually by late January.
There is still alot of snow on the ground. You can see how dense the forest is in Northern Pennsylvania by the darker shade to the image there. Other types of satellite images simply can't show with such clarity what we see here!
It's neat how you can see the outline of the Tug Hill, too. And I noticed how dark the coloration is in the Toronto area. I checked some local traffic cams in that area and it confirms that there is absolutely NO snow cover whatsoever in Toronto and the surrounding area. Not even any rogue snow banks to be found. Looks very April-like up that way.
ReplyDeleteScott how come Lake Erie is frozen in such a wierd formation this year?
ReplyDeleteHey Scotty,
ReplyDeleteTake a look at this:

I saw some mud sticking out from under some black snow today!!! It's spring in Rochester!
ReplyDeleteYou really want me to seriously look at a computer model forecast for March 20th now? Sorry man, weather don't work that way!
ReplyDeleteDon't gotta be a jerk about it....man. And for your information, i'm a female.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that, you really can't get tone from this type of conversation. I wasn't looking to be jerky. Sorry it came off that way, really!!!
ReplyDeleteScott, How does a large lake like Erie freeze, when the smaller finger lakes don't freeze?
