TUESDAY'S WEATHER IS WHAT I CALL "FUN"CASTING!

Written By: Scott Hetsko

You may sometimes hear meteorologists use the term "low confidence" in describing their forecast. What this really means is that they (we) aren't comfortable with how a particular storm is behaving. Tuesday is a prime example. Dying low pressure over the Ohio valley with transfer it's power to a new low on the coast Tuesday. Meanwhile, strong high pressure is perched in Southern Ontario providing a block and dry air to our area.

So the question becomes, how much of that rain makes it to Rochester? Well I think at least showers are likely even North of the thruway for awhile Tuesday morning and afternoon. There is no doubt that the most rain and coolest air will be in the Southern Tier Counties where highs will struggle to reach the upper 50s. Rochester should get to around 60 with a few showers likely. We are looking forward to a big, fat warm-up coming later in the week!

  1. I've heard some of your competitors use "low confidence" before. Didn't really know what it meant though. By the way, Scott, I've always wondered something about all the competing TV networks. Do the competing chief meteorologists all get along with eachother, or is there a little tension between you all? Like, have you ever sat down and had a drink with Glenn or Kevin before?

  2. Over the past several years we have run into each other from time to time. We don't hang out but they are both really good guys and forecasters as well. Low confidence basically means the forecast presented is in doubt. Today was a perfect example where a 20 mile movement in showers busted a forecast. That's why I was talking about a close shave last night.

  3. Thanks Scott. Yeah, if only today's event was in the form of frozen precip, it would be a nice bonus snowfall. Ha, can you tell i'm a snow lover....
