RADAR LIT UP!

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

Dare I say that it was good to see something on radar today? It brought the relief that most of us wanted from all the heat, as well as relief for the starving lawns and gardens. However, it was a bit extreme for a few places. You can see the vibrant deep oranges and reds in the radar grab I took from this afternoon, with the polygon indicating the first Flash Flood warning of the afternoon. This would later be extended to areas of Wyoming and Wayne counties, with some areas seeing over 3" of rain within just a few hours.

Why the flooding? Think of dry ground as being vapor-locked. Its been hot and rain free for a long time, so the ground is rock hard (just ask my golf tees that I couldn't get into the ground the other day) and any surplus water just rolls right off it or pools.

The rain doesn't last long though, by Saturday morning we're already starting the clearing process again. In fact, with temperatures back in the low 80s, it'll be the perfect weekend!
