Sticking with Scott's approach of showing the snow forecast in 12 hour chunks. Here is my map for today up until 6pm this evening. Not much change in the location of snow. With the northwest winds we will see lots of multi-bands. These don't typically produce the 2 inch a hour snow rates but could still see 1/2 to an inch an hour from some of these brief bands. Also the winds of 10 to 20 mph and occasional gust near or over 30 mph will cause white out conditions.
Keep your amounts coming. If some of you can update at 11am so I can use them at noon that would be great. Also if you have photos you can email them too weather@wroctv.com
Not much new snow here overnight (Hilton), but the winds obviously kicked up. Same as last time....lots of grass due to blowing snow. Boo! Sounds like we are done over here with about 4 inches.

ReplyDeleteMany of the forecastes predicted last night that a strong band with a georgian bay connection would set up over the city and places like Brighton,ER, Fairport and Penfield would get hit hard. Scott agreed on a post last night. Is that still the thinking that from about 1am to 10am tomorrow that band will set up?
7 inches of snow in North Gates and still snowing.
ReplyDeleteI would tend to agree with that assessment. That Georgian Bay connection is why there is that impressive band southwest of Buffalo. The winds are expected to push it to the east some more and then impact parts north of Buffalo. If we get a more WNW wind circulating through then yes that connection could swing through the area and county.

Picked up about 8" since yesterday evening. Roads are quite slick and snow covered. Traffic is backed up everywhere....It doesn't help that the City of Rochester decided to keep schools open in these conditions.

ReplyDeleteThe band that is near Buffalo has really started to shift eastward over the past few hours... it should die down some as it moves between the lakes and then restrengthen as the connection comes across Lake Ontario later today

ReplyDeleteBeing that you have exposer to the news room, i'm sure you've been hearing about all of the traffic accidents on the expressways. With the snow still coming down, do you think we may end up having travel advisories?
Travelers E on 104 from Webster, Union Hill-Williamson will face occasional white outs. Salt does not seem to be effective in this cold. I am estimating 5" overnight 1/2 mile SE of Bear Creek Harbor in NE Town of Ontario. Steady gusts make getting an accurate snowfall total tricky. The snow waxes and wanes but had not stopped completely since sunrise.
ReplyDeleteI have heard a lot of the travel problems but since I am far from the newsroom and scanner I don't hear them. I know it is our lead story.
ReplyDeleteAs far as travel advisories, I am not sure how those are issued. They are not done by the NWS. I know from our time lapse graphics of the DOT cameras it doesn't look good out there. If it were me and I didn't have to go anywhere I wouldn't.
John B - Thanks for the report. No the salt and chemicals don't work that well as the temperatures get colder. We have bee at 12 all morning long.
There was a short, 20 minute cessation of LES and it has just now resumed at my NE Ontario location.
