WHATEVER SNOW THAT STUCK, STUCK AROUND

Written By: Scott Hetsko

I've never seen snow stick around this consistently in all my years in Rochester! Since December 1st, 70 of 76 days have had at least 1" of snow on the ground. In other words, 92% of the time, the ground has been white.
It would take weeks of scouring records to find another Winter with more consistent snow for so long. We are currently on a 40 day streak with 1" of more at the airport.
We're forecasting many snow melting days ahead though so I think the streak may officially end Friday. After one cold day tomorrow, I expect a rapid warmup to the 40s and 50s the remainder of the week.

  1. Yeah, even though we didn't really see too much in the way of synoptic snow, this has been an impressive winter. Scott, do you think our weather in late february/early march is going to be un-eventful like last year?

  2. I'm from Genesee county (have lived in Rochester since 2007), and I have never seen snow stick around for so long either. We've had many winters, especially lately, where whenever we got a good snowpack, it melted in short order. Definitely a different story this winter. And up until today, the snowpack has been quite deep, too. I was driving around the city over the weekend and remarked how tall the snow banks on the side of the streets are getting. Can't imagine how deep it would have been if we had gotten hit by a few major synoptic snowstorms. Maybe next year for that. I think "synoptic snow" is going to return with a vengence next year. That might be a wish cast, but I just have a feeling.

  4. South of Rochester NEVER gets as much snow as the metro because of lake effect among other reasons. That's just a fact, Anonymous. I think that the snowiest December EVER IN RECORDED HISTORY is impressive. Sorry it didn't happen down in no-mans-land, but for the much more densely populated areas of the Greater Rochester area, it was Impressive.

  5. Yep, say what you will about "lake effect fluff", Rochester gets alot more snow than areas south. If you wanna bask in the snow, you gotta move north of the thruway. Rochester and Monroe county could use a rejuvination of its population anyway. And if you have some incorrect idea that the city is a dangerous place to live, then come live in our suburbs. From Henrietta to Irondequoit - Greece to Pittsford. We welcome you!

  7. Or 315 land within 10 miles of the lakeshore...thats where the real snow is! This is unofficially the snowiest winter since 2003-04 where we received something like 200 inches due to heavy and consistent lake effect.
