A Bit of Snow on the Way

Written by John DiPasquale:

Well, snow lovers this will not be a big snow event by any means, but at least it will be something. We will likely pick up just a coating to maybe an inch or two late tonight for most. Some of the hills will get a bit more South of I-90. Tomorrow will be very blustery & cold with temperatures around 30 at 5 or 6am, but dropping to near 20 by day's end! Wind chills will also plummet into the single digits, & possibly a bit below zero at times late! What a rude awakening it will be after the mild weather overall last month & this month too! Also, with temperatures dropping so quickly any water on roads, parking lots & sidewalks will freeze fast on untreated surfaces. This will likely lead to a very slick ride in to work tomorrow morning. Also, gusty winds will cause the light fluffy lake snows that will be flying around to blow & drift a bit, which will reduce visibilities at times & cause slick spots on roads, especially West-East oriented ones. Snowfall totals for most will range from as little as an inch to as much as 3 or 4". However, across some of the hills per the snowfall map above, there could be 2 to 6" due to the quicker changeover to snow tonight. So again, the big story will not be the snow, but the brutal winds & cold blowing in tomorrow.

A bit more snow will likely fall later Thursday into Thursday night & possibly even Friday. There may be a bit of a mix Friday, though, due to some milder air. Stay tuned.

Have a nice night WNY!

  2. Lol, Dan, are you just posting under anonymous now?...I'm excited - I like snow, and I like wind too - anything is better than 40 degrees and overcast/rainy. I'll take 1-4 over what we have been getting. Thanks for some good news John

  3. Ooops, sorry. That is me, Mr. negative.

  4. We will just have to wait and see what the next few possible storms may bring. I thought the change over would be faster and we would get more snow out of this one. Sorry! The forecasting has been tough the last few winters. I just hope we get that one big storm this winter where we are in the bullseye and get one of those 18-24 inches expected forecasts. I will keep staying positive for you weatherdan.

  5. I do not know Andrew. This could be the winter that was not as far as snow goes. I know there is a lot of time left, but I just have a feeling that we could break the least snowiest winter of all times.

  6. winter weather advisory!! Woo Hoo

  7. They just issued an advisory with much higher totals then news 8 is forecasting... they have totals of 4-8 inches instead of 1-4/2-5 range

  8. What stinks if this was snow instead of rain we could have had a decent accunulation.

  9. I didn't see any higher amounts....I wish it was all rain...the motor blew in my truck...

  10. Ok this one again was nothing big but lets model hug which never comes true but the EURO has a big time bomb for next week but GFS does not. Hey it is nice to dream if you are a snow lover. But if that EURO was ever right we would be getting that 1-2 feet ha ha.

  11. The track is slightly to the west, meaning more rain for us. We've gotten almost a third of an inch of rain. A few degrees colder and it would have been snow. Oh well. The transition is coming, and we still expect a coating to an inch or two at most by morning, but nothing more in the hills as most of that moisture is gone already. Wednesday will just be turning bitter cold with single digit wind chills. With temps falling through the 20s, even a little bit of lake effect will become a nuisance with the blowing and drifting, and watch out for roads quickly freezing over.

  12. This is pitiful. It is almost 11pm and the temp is still 38 with rain. We will all wake up to green grass once again. By the time the cold air comes in the precip will be over. The lowest December snowfall still looks good. Bring on Spring and baseball. As is usually the case storms go to our West or South and East. Unbelievable.

  13. Why they even have winter weather advisories out is beyond me. They should be dropped.

  14. This is hilarious--another miss. How great is that?? "Uh Oh it dried out". Absolutely hysterical.
I know we are going to get it but good after mid Jan, but until then I'm LUVIN' IT!!

  15. You might not have to wait until mid January, Anonymous.. looks like the atmosphere wants to get a little more active first two weeks of the New Year.

  17. Does anyone here remember Pat from SNL.......When reading the "complaining" above, that is the voice I attach to those words. Makes me laugh. Maybe changing your handle to weatherpat would be more fitting.
    Still, love the diverse dialogue!

  18. Snowing really nicely in Greece. Grass is finally covered for the first time this year!!! Better late than ever I guess!!!

  22. WELL, T IS USPOED TO WARM UP BY THE END OF THE WEEK SO THE TRACE TO AN INCH WE RECIEVED TODAY WILL BE GONE QUICKLY. IT LOOKS TO GET COLD NEXT WEEK BUT NO STORMS.

  23. Solid 2-3inches in Hilton and still snowing pretty good...

  25. Even though we didn't receive the areas first widespread snowfall ,it's great to see snow flying through the air and to feel true winter cold! It appears as though the pattern is beginning to finally make a turn toward snow and cold, especially the beginning of next week! Enjoy the cold and blustery day everyone!

  26. Just a very light dusting on the far east side of Fairport. But it's nice to see snow in the air.

I can't believe how a few of you have given up on winter already and it's not even Jan 1! Seriously, most of our big storms aren't in November or December. Jan-early March is when we generally have gotten our big snow events.

I was trying to find the top 10 or 20 largest snow storms we've ever had, but couldn't find the data. If you could share a link it would be appreciated. Thanks!

  27. About a half inch maybe a bit more up by Highland Park, and snowing pretty steadily

  28. Just snowblowed. 4 inches fluff in Hilton. still snowing about 1/2inch per hour. Windy as hell.

  29. I AM WEATHERPAT.....I AM ALWAYS YELLING (OR JUST TYPING IN CAPS)....I AM A LIBERAL (NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT)...
BTW - SNOWING MODERATELY IN CHILI WITH ABOUT AN INCH OR SO ON LAWN

  30. First dusting of the year in Caledonia.

Andy, that data is surprisingly hard to find. I thought I found it on NOAA but it was a dead link. If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on February having slightly more major storms...followed closely by January and then March. That is a guess and could be entirely backward, but I'm pretty sure you are correct to say the majority of major snow events happen after the new year.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I also wanted to mention... the town of Avon, NY has an annual average snow total of around 50 inches. It misses the majority of lake events from Ontario and Erie. If it wasn't for our lakes, that would likely be the normal for all of Western NY. We simply are not in an area that favors large storms very frequently.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would have to agree with Caledonia about average snowfall. I'm pretty sure the pros would be able to tell us for sure but I would think more than half of our snow is lake effect. Especially last December.
