A Little of Everything for Our Leap Day

Written by John DiPasquale:

The weather will be chilly, but quiet through tonight.

Tomorrow, though, a warm front will push in, & should trigger a bit of wet snow initially during the morning for about 2 or 3 hours before it changes to an icy mix briefly & then pretty quickly over to some plain rain during the early to mid afternoon. So by around 3 tomorrow afternoon most of us should be seeing just some rain, as temperatures will be rising through the 30s above freezing. Highs on our Wednesday will likely occur in the evening when readings reach into the low 40s toward tomorrow night. Temperatures will top out in the low to mid 40s Thursday morning, but then should ease back into the 30s during the day as the weakening storm responsible for tomorrow's mixture moves across the region. We will likely pick up a bit more rain mixing with, if not changing to a little wet snow before ending as some snizzle & drizzle late Thursday into early Thursday night.

Friday will turn windy & mild, but then a strong cold front will bring us back to reality Saturday morning with some rain & maybe even a t-storm early Saturday. Much colder air will follow later Saturday & especially Saturday night into Sunday. Some snow will likely be flying & possibly accumulating a bit Sunday through the start of Monday.

Have a great night & be careful tomorrow morning through lunch time if you have to travel.

  1. Because there isn't much else to "blog" about, what is the over/under on how many times weatherdan has said "Well guys, I am done with this blog until next winter." I count no less than 3 times...Ha ha...

  2. It looks like after this weekend, the models are hinting at a big warm up.

    Spring has arrived!!!!!

Let's start a new contest. When do you think we will see the first inch of snow for the 2012/13 season?

  3. I think 3rd year Ninas are usually pretty lame. I cringe thinking what would happen if we have back to back lousy winters.

  4. I do not want to give the expert any fuel because he has been very critical. However he/she did say watch this weekend for a BIG snow storm and that door is not closed yet. Look at the GFS for Sun/Mon time frame. There is a trough forming and a storm there will possibly a HP to the north feeding cold air. Could be a classic Noreaster. The question for us would be is it too far east. It has showed a few times and the intriguing thing is it is only 5-6 days out not 10-14. Wondering what Scott thinks is it there or am I nuts.

  5. I don't see anything coastal forming for the upcoming weekend. Just snow over to rain storms as we've seen most of winter. I can't remember all three months of "meteorological" winter averaging 5 degrees above average. I think we'll see our first 70 degree day in March. I doubt they'll be a big snowstorm, I think winter is about dead.

Put this one in your back pocket and think parade, lilacs and backyard BBQs

  6. Sorry meant the Euro showed the strom not GFS. I want to be accurate with source

  7. Wow Scott, you of all people should know how quickly weather can change around here! Its clear that you and your weather team are frustrated about this winter, but show at least a little compassion and perseverance...

  8. Weatherguy, March 1 is Thursday, and after Monday the temps are going to warm. The first two weeks of March look mild. Get on the reality train and head to spring with everyone else. This winter is over, sorry but it is the truth.

  9. Sorry Weatherguy. I see what I see. I'm not saying there won't be anymore snow but the chances of a major winter snowstorm will wane each day of March. The first two weeks will be above to much above average air in the Northeast.

  10. I ♥ Scott and this Winter. Bring on Spring!

  11. Reality has set in when Scott says it is done it is done. We all have to move on to the spring. Although March in the past has brought some big storms there is not a favorable pattern for this. Worst winter in my lifetime for snow lovers. Not one big storm.

  12. Yup, winter 2011-2012 is DEAD. It was the worst winter ever for $14,000 of sleds sitting in my garage when we JUST got them toward the end of last season. Was so looking forward to this snow season but it is what it is, we can't change the weather. Bring on the warmth, kind of excited to hear 70 in March....I'm upset about no storms BUT let's move on, the sun is getting warmer, the temps don't support any lasting snow, cold for a couple of days and back above freezing. We need a winter activist support group....really bumbed out, the only cure now is bright warm sunshine next to the poolside.

  13. So it has us in snow right now on the radar, does that just mean its not making it to the ground, whats that called, vertigo?

  14. virga

Virga is any form or precipitation that doesn’t reach the ground. There could be rain virga or snow virga. But in either case, the precipitation evaporates somewhere on the journey from clouds toward earth.

  15. Happy to see Scott throwing in the towel on winter, hope he's right. The only thing a heavy snow would do now is delay spring and it's activities by weeks. A nice stretch of dry 50+ degree weather is badly needed. The ground is really wet.
If normal snow falls in March the total for the season will not be at all unusual when looking at winters from 1930-1970. It is unusual only in that snow has been absurdly heavy around here since about 1990 and this winter is an aberration in that pattern. Hopefully we will go back to the "old days" of winter, but I doubt it.
The warmth with 4 months +5 F is as Scott said unprecedented. The only ones not enjoying that are about 7-8 people on this blog and RGE.

  16. Hello Bloggers,

A little snow & sleet this morning & early afternoon, but then it's mainly rain through much of tonight. Late tonight into tomorrow morning as the upper level & surface storm move through with maybe a heavier burst of precipitation we could at the very least see rain mix with some wet snow, if not totally change over, especially over the high terrain. I do believe the high terrain south of the thruway will pick up a slushy coating to two or three inches of slop late tonight through Thursday. Most of us, though, will see little, if any, accumulation out of this tomorrow. It all tapers to drizzle &/or snizzle later tomorrow into Thursday night.

Friday will turn windy & mild with some sun, & then a strong cold front will blow through Saturday morning with some showers & colder air to follow later Saturday into Sunday. A little accumulating snow will probably fly Sunday into the start of Monday.

With the exception of the end of this weekend & start of next week, Scott is absolutely right! All signs point toward well above average temperatures & not much snow at all right through at least the first two weeks of March. Could it be an early start to spring!? We've had a few early starts to spring out of the last 5 years. March has been very tame lately, & it's looking more & more like this one may be too. We'll see. We all know how long range data goes sometimes, but with the way this winter has been a mild, not snowy March would not surprise me the least bit.

    Have a good night.

    John

  17. For the record, we had this happen in 2001-2002, where Dec, Jan, and Feb were all 5+ F above average....

  18. Then what happened Weatherguy?

    ReplyDelete
  19. What was the winter of 2002-03 like?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Weatherguy,Snowluver and Ginger, It does not matter what the winter of 2002-03 was like. The last chance this winter of "significant" or of even any snowfall at all, will be Saturday-Monday. After this time frame you might as well forget it. Stop hoping for what is not there. This winter is fading very quickly. SORRY BUT THAT IS THE TRUTH. I love the snow also, but it is not going to help this winter. After this weekend and Monday it will be time to think spring.

  21. Ginger - the winter of 2002-03 was long, cold and snowy. I, too, am a snowmobiler, and that was the best winter over the past ten years. I rode from early December through late March. 3300 miles that winter, without even trying that hard.

Winter 1995-96 was long, cold and snowy as well, which was preceded by another wimpy, up and down winter of 1994-95 (though there were several stretches of -10 degree days in Jan 1995)

  22. Ginger i am sorry I did not notice that you where asking about the winter following the one in which weatherguy was talking about. I would also hope next winter would be LONG, COLD AND SNOWY.

  23. Well "The Expert" is still not ready to eat crow. I am still keeping an eye on Sunday/Monday you never know a Noreaster may develop to alls surprise. " The Expert"

    ReplyDelete
  24. "EXPERT", What does CLIMATOLOGY tell you. Instead of the "EXPERT" I would like to call you the "CLIMATOLOGIST". This title fits your forecasting capability better than the title the "EXPERT".

So "CLIMATOLOGIST" INSTEAD OF EATING CROW I KNOW SOMETHING ELSE THAT WILL SUIT YOU MUCH BETTER. EAT (SH_T) INSTEAD AND LEAVE US ALONE.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is now " The Climatologist" another new name given to me on the blog. "The Climatologist" still says do not give up hope yet he is not ready to eat sh_t as the classy anon. posted above. Going to wait until at least Friday before I hit the toilet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "Climatologist", where is your Noreaster for Sundat/Monday, not a single model is showing anything. I Guess you should stick to what you know best and that is CLIMATOLOGY. MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE THE LID WHEN YOU ARE DONE IN THE BATHROOM, ENJOY.

  27. Stick a fork in it, it's done. Sadly winter never arrived and I'm sick of brown. Let's hope for some good drying conditions and a nice warm spring and summer. And hope for lots of cold and snow next year.

  28. Come on guys grow up. Can you just have a civil discussion about the weather?

  29. Yeah I was wrong and am officially done with the blog. There looks like no Noreaster this year. It is sad that I have been negative but some on here are just mean and nasty. People have to grow up.

  30. One good reason to still come to the blog is the entertainment! Keep it going!

  31. Everyone should cheer up, it will be close to 70 by the end of next week with possible prolonged sunshine from mid week on. I think everyone will enjoy late next weeks weather.
