Are We In a Drought?

Written by: Stacey Pensgen

We all know it has been extremely dry, but are we in a drought? Technically, no. At least thats according to the Climate Prediction Center. As of Thursday, when the latest data was released, the Rochester area is "abnormally dry," while the Buffalo area is in the "moderate drought" category.

Drought is defined as a "significant deficit in moisture availability due to lack of rainfall." Regardless of the definition, chances are most of us would consider our area in a drought.

We will find at least a little relief this weekend with scattered pop-up showers and storms both Saturday, and a better chance on Sunday. That being said, because they are scattered in nature, not everybody will see rain this weekend. A cold front forecast to move through during the middle of next week looks to be our next real shot at an area-wide, appreciable rainfall. Stay tuned, and keep your fingers crossed for some rain this weekend!

  1. We have not seen rain here in Hilton/Hamlin area since those big thunderstorms in early June. It rained for 10 minutes last Saturday, maybe .10 inches fell then.....

  2. I am also in Hilton. We always laugh about being in a micro-climate. Right now the radar says it is raining here, but we haven't seen a drop yet. We need it sooooo badly! Like David said, we haven't seen rain in a while. Even the showers on Friday night missed us.
