Indian Summer to What??

Written by John DiPasquale:

A gray, pretty uneventful Wednesday will continue with highs near 60.  Meanwhile, some big time warmth is brewing just to the south & west of the state currently, which will begin being imported on Thursday compliments of southerly breeze in the wake of a warm front due to pass through Thursday morning.  Highs Thursday afternoon with some developing sun should reach the low to mid 70s!  It will stay unseasonably warm with some more sun on Friday with highs once again in the 70s!  Enjoy this bout of Indian Summer, because over the weekend reality will arrive with falling temperatures Saturday into Sunday.  Temperatures will fall out of the 60s into the 50s Saturday & 50s to the 40s possibly Sunday with some showers possible.  All along, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Sandy will be working up the east coast.  The BIG QUESTION with Sandy is exactly where does she track?  Will the storm head out to sea harmlessly, or come up the coast with hurricane force winds, flooding & beach erosion along the coast, while heavy rains & mountain snows could fall inland over many parts of the Northeast, or lastly begin heading out to sea before retrograding back into New England as a super intense storm come early to mid next week with lots of heavy rain, & possibly some heavy high terrain snow???  So bottom line, there's a lot of questions with regards to how this storm will impact the area.  Basically, be prepared for not such a pretty weekend & next week.  Stay tuned to News 8 for the latest on this big storm potential.

  1. Obviously its way too early to be suggesting anything, but if the 12z were to verify, Sandy would literally "bomb out" over WNY with values near 950 mb! Definitely watching this one...

  2. What does "bomb out" mean? I think you mean a lot of rain not snow big deal. Have not seen one local met say anything about snow so who cares about a rain storm?

  3. "Bomb out" means rapidly strengthen/intensify, with its pressure rapidly dropping as well. The lower the barometric pressure, the stronger the storm. Regardless of which model you look at, its seems like a sure thing that Sandy is going to wallop at least somebody along the east coast. It may snow a bit in the higher elevations, but if the models verify, were talking a lot of rain, and significant winds! I'm no meteorologist, but I'm sure News 8 will start talking about this one fairly soon!

  4. What are they going to talk about heavy rain? Big deal. You act as if we never had big rain for a few days. This is no big deal for Rochester just a good old fashion soaking. Plus there is a good chance it goes right and into the Atlantic. I just want to make sure no one is getting Rochesterians nervous.

  5. Anonymous, heavy rain is a big deal! It's people like you who don't have a care in the world, and when something bad happens, like maybe a deluge at your front door, then you want some one to bail you out. It's always good to be prepared.

  6. It is a big deal if this storm doesnt move fast, we are used to seeing storms that move at 30mph and up, so they dont stick around, with a storm that only moves at 10mph it will be here for a while. I doubt we will get hit, most of the time these storms pass us here. Although with the jet stream and the cold air coming in is supposed to intensify it :-( yike.

  7. I keep hearing comparisons with the "Perfect Storm" of 1991. I don't remember what effect that storm had here in Rochester. Anyone know the answer?

  8. Um I believe that woiuld be the devastating ice storm that is not going to happen.

  9. Although the ice storm was in 1991, the "perfect storm" happened on Halloween, where a hurricane went up the coast, got robbed of its moisture by another area of low pressure, then basically became another hurricane. However, I only think folks on the coast experienced effects, nothing more than a little rain here in WNY.

  10. Then that would be correct comparing this to that. This is what will happen no big deal in western NY.

  11. I hope people are right in saying no big deal for us here in Western NY, because I keep seeing visions of Hurricane Agnes in the 70's that flooded us.
