A RAINY, MILD END TO THE WEEK

Written by John DiPasquale:

The rest of today will be a little chilly with a cool breeze out of the northeast keeping areas near the big lake quite chilly, mainly in the 30s to near 40, while the rest of the area should make the mid 40s & possibly a bit higher south of the Thruway.  Clouds will also increase this afternoon & should lead to a little rain later this evening & overnight thanks to a fast moving low tracking to the south later tonight.

The next system coming together across the Upper Midwest will hook to the west of us later Friday into Friday evening & usher in a milder air mass Friday afternoon & evening.  Some pretty good rains & possibly a t-storm or two, along with gusty southerly winds will build in during the midday and afternoon hours Friday too, as the milder air arrives.  Highs later Friday afternoon will push well up into the 50s, but a cold front will quickly make it's way across the region late Friday night/early Saturday & cool us off into the low 40s with a few scattered rain & snow showers Saturday.  Wind chills Saturday will dip into the mid 20s to low 30s for much of the day, as winds will whip the colder air in out of the northwest, so if you are going to head out for the Red Wings home opener be sure to bundle up!  No surprise there!

High pressure will build in & provide a good deal of sun to end the weekend with highs reaching the mid to upper 40s, & all in all shouldn't feel too bad Sunday afternoon with light winds.

Late Monday through Tuesday is a time frame the News 8 weather team has been watching very closely, as a storm will develop near the Gulf of Mexico & come north.  At this point, though, it looks like the storm MAY take more of a westerly track & move just west of, or right over us & if this is the case most of the accumulating precipitation would fall in the form of rain.  However, this could change significantly between now & when this storm is supposed to affect us, so definitely stay tuned for updates through the start of next week for the latest from us.

Have a great day Everyone!

  1. Interesting sounds like still a great deal of uncertainty but the best guess for a day on April 8th would be rain.

  2. It looks like it will be a rainy spring. Oh joy!!!

    1. Better than a cold, snowy Spring.

  3. C-Quad, what would need to be the set up for the rain to turn to snow instead; and how real would that possibility be?

    1. For snow the storm would have to track pretty far southeast of us, and the bulk of the precipitation would have to occur at night. Any other setup would lead to a sloppy mix or just rain.

  4. It is over rain next week and spring temperatures beyond. Lets move on snow people you had your last big hit last Saturday. Models are moving this west warm side equals rain side. KW and RMA can not both be wrong.

    1. Would not count out snow or a mix of snow/rain for next week. Need to watch what the temps will be for a couple of days -- remember if they begin to drop; it is easy for it to turn one way vs. another. Besides C-Quad is only 80% sure that it will be rain.

    2. Why do you speak of C-Quad like they're a professional and certified meteorologist. Don't believe everything you hear.

  5. Looks like CCCC also has given into rain? No response from him?

  6. Rain is still favored over snow, but nothing in that regard is set in stone yet. It's becoming a lot tougher to justify a snow scenario though.

  7. It is 99% sure it is rain not snow.

    1. Eh, I'd go with perhaps 80 percent at this point due simply to the amount of time remaining.

  8. There will be a HIS in the Flower City within the next 6 days. Mark it down!!!!!!!!

  9. Have not been able to any recent model runs? Are we still expecting a storm going west and giving us rain?

  10. Must be 100% official all rain because it is real quiet on blog even CCCC still sleeping.

    1. What planet are you on -- there will be pretty much no Spring this year. Snow in April.

  12. Now a 100 percent sure rain early next week so at lease we will not have that horrific heavy wet snow.

  13. There will be quite a hefty amount of rain (well over an inch) between now and the end of Tuesday though, so with an already saturated ground there will be localized flood concerns.

  14. Not complaining because we had a great winter but boy why could we not get this track with moisture and cold air 2 months ago.

    1. So you you feel the rain will change to snow or a mix?

  15. No Anon think we have been pretty clear this is an all rain event for sure just said it would have been a heck of a snow storm if this was February.

    2. Hey -- it was snowing this morning. what happened to your "all rain" comment. Pretty sure it is not an "all rain event".

  16. The track is almost right over the top of us, so even in the middle of January we would see mixed precip at some point. An ideal track would be about 150-200 miles further SE.

  17. Why can you not move it there CCCC darn it use your power!

    1. First I'll need to gather energy from all life forms on Earth. Then I'll need to throw the energy at the storm and invariably miss, at which point a conveniently placed blogger will bounce it back towards the storm and hit it dead center to shift it the exact distance necessary. Then I will begin my long journey towards becoming a Super Sand and eventually change my name to Kakacarrotcake. All of this should take roughly 400 episodes to accomplish.

  18. Imagine if this rain was all snow. It would be a winter wonderland. With all of the melting snow and now this rain; concern with basement flooding. UGH!!!!

Honestly would just like a little bit of Spring, sunshine, some flowers popping up, and 60+ degree weather. After 7-months of Winter, it is getting a little depressing. But I guess we will simply have to keep waiting.

  19. Another snow, wintery Saturday. Hope it will not turn out to be like it was last Saturday. However, for us winter, snow lovers -- we could not ask for anything more.

  20. With this type of weather, no wonder people are having a hard time being up beat and nice. Another cold, windy, and yes SNOWY day. Though I would love to break the 115+ inch mark for snow this year. Have to admit, getting just a "little bit" tired of this type of weather. Depressing to say the least. :(

  21. Why does this type of weather have to occur on the weekend vs. during the week. For those of us who don't have the lesiure of being able to take days off during the week; it would be nice to have at least one day of 60 degree and sunny weather on the weekend. Have to agree -- getting depressed.

  22. I walk with my dog year-round and am concerned with spring and fall weather, particularly for the insect/pest outlook. I have pulled 2 ticks off my dog already this season. I finally treated with a topical preventive, and can usually count on it working. Then there's the fleas . . .Anyway, I thought it would be helpful to folks like me to have an entomologist join the weather team to provide a forecast for such annoying and deadly parasites. Did I mention mosquitoes and heartworm?

  23. Four consecutive months with 20+ inches of snow this winter. In 74 prior seasons of record keeping at the airport I could find only 3 other instances of that occurring. Just goes to show how rare these consistent wall-to-wall winters are. Today's barely measurable snowfall also makes April the 6th consecutive month with measurable snow, which is actually a fairly typical occurrence. Hard to believe we live in a region where snow is a realistic concern half of the year.

  24. Sounds like snow can be expected for Tuesday if the temperature continues to drop throughout the evening and overnight -- rain will turn to snow or a snowy mix. Winter is still holding on, and is not exiting yet.

    1. Look at Scott's forecast for the week -- Tuesday, chilly mix. I did not say it would definitely snow or be a snowy mix. Only stated that if the temps begin to fall with the rain; it will turn to snow or a snowy mix. If the temps stay in the 40's or even higher -- will only be rain.

    3. you might want to check our KW's post on 10's website. Have to say he has been pretty accurate this winter with his forecasts. So you crawl back into your cave until Winter has decided it is over and Spring/Summer can arrive.
