Super Bowl Weather & Climate 1967-2008

Written by: Brian Neudorff

One thing I have learned in this business is most people love weather history, and if you can combine it with sports history, then people seem to get really interested. Doing some search I came across a list of all the Super Bowls and the weather conditions at the time the game was played.

With the Super Bowl being played in Tampa this weekend between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals, I thought it would fun to share this list with you. It is a PDF file compiled by William Schmitz Service Climatologist/ Meteorologist for NOAA Southeast Regional Climate Center, with all the Super Bowls and the weather that took place during these games, or in some cases, the weather outside when the game was played indoors.

Here are some quick facts about the list:

13 of 42 Bowls Played indoors
16 of 42 Bowls had a Trace or More of Rain at nearby reporting weather station.
2 Bowls had Snow on Game Day (1982,2006)
1 Bowl played during an Ice Storm (2000)
Warmest High Temperature of 82° (1973,2003)
Coldest High Temp for Dome Game 16° (1982)
Coldest High Temp for Non-Dome Game 43° (1972)
Wettest Super Bowl .92 inches (2007)
Outside Games With High Wind Gust (1980, 1984, 1989,2007)

Here are some weather tid bits from the 4 Super Bowls the Bills played in:

1991 27-Jan Tampa, FL (Tampa Stadium) High-74/ Low-56
1992 26-Jan Minneapolis, MN (Metrodome) High-26/ Low-7, 10 inches of snow outside
1993 31-Jan Pasadena, CA (Rose Bowl) High-66/ Low-42, Rain-0.19"
1994 30-Jan Atlanta, GA (Georgia Dome) High-46/ Low-36, Rain-0.03"
