I DROPPED THE BALL ON PERSEIDS!

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

Well, I apologize. One of the most visually stunning astronomical events that can be seen with the naked eye peaked last night, and I didn't even tell you about it!

Early this morning was the high point for the Perseids meteor shower. Dry air worked in surprisingly well late yesterday just before sunset, bringing a nearly perfect viewing window to the sky for all to enjoy.

A meteor shower occurs when the earth's orbit takes a path through an existing area of meteoroids, or small pieces of debris in space. when they enter our atmosphere, they streak across the sky and vaporize as they burn up during entry. I've witnessed several occasions of the Perseids and it is visually stunning. At the peak, there are over 80 meteors per hour over a several hour stretch.

Tonight you could still get a good glimpse. Although it won't be a clear night quite like the one we just got out of, there should be a few breaks if the high clouds don't push in too quickly. Either way, it'll be a great Friday night to spend out on the porch. Enjoy!
