HISTORIC STORM OVER MINNESOTA
Written by: Scott Hetsko
Intense low pressure is over Northern Minnesota. Some towns over the Northern half of that state have recorded their lowest pressure readings in history! Observations I've seen have been around 960.1 mb or 28.35". Blizzard warnings are in effect for most of North Dakota for blinding snow with wind gusts over 50 mph! That storm will swing a strong front across NY tonight. We expect 2-4 hours of storms tonight with the biggest threat being damaging wind gusts over 50 mph. This brief but intense line of storms will be East of Syracuse before sunrise Wednesday.
Scott,
ReplyDeleteEven though we're not going to see the history stuff from this storm, it's really got to be fascinating as a meteorologist to watch these monster, history making storms evolve in real time. I'm not a meteorologist, but I just sit back in awe over the pure science of these kinds of storms.
By the way, do you think global warming has anything to do with the enormous strength of this monster?
I should clarify that this set a minimum (October) low pressure for Minnesota. The point is that we've seen similar storms in the past. Nothing new for our friends in the great plains.
ReplyDeleteStorms sometimes get really strong, Global warming or not so no I would not say that climate change has anything to do with this guy. It is fun to watch though!
The pressure from the storm got down to 955 mb which is the strongest non-tropical storm system to ever affect the lower 48 states
ReplyDeleteDidn't the Ohio blizzard of 1978 have a lower BP?
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if one of the mets could tell me the best rain gauge to buy. Are the rain gauges from like a WalMart accurate? I don't want to spend a ton of money on one, but I do want one that will give roughly accurate readings.
ReplyDeleteThanks
