RELENTLESS COLD, SNOW THIS WINTER
Written By: Scott Hetsko
Oh where do I begin? You may remember that in November, I forecasted a strong La Nina Winter in the Northeast and all that goes with it. Up and down temperatures, 75-100" of snow and many thaws. How did that turn out? Why did it go the other way? Although La Nina was present, it was overshadowed by an two and half month blocking pattern one like I've never seen before! This Arctic block sent a parade of Arctic cold fronts beginning in early December and not ending until mid February. Below are some of the amazing statistics about this Winter which is just about to end.
DECEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY (METEOROLOGICAL WINTER)
OVERALL MEAN TEMPERATURE: 24.2 (-2.1) DEGREES
SNOWFALL: 111.5" (+41.6)
DAYS WITH MEASURABLE SNOW: 64 (+18)
DAYS WITH SNOWCOVER: 85 (+25)
And I was just wondering how many days above average for snow cover we have had. AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteCool stats Scott!! I was wondering how many of you plow snow for a living.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is, I have never seen a winter this consistently cold and snowy.
Some of you on here complain how meager this winter has been, I couldn't disagree more. Our salt usage is over 150% of the norm. and our plow runs are higher than we have ever had (18 yrs). Would love to hear what you guys think. J
I agree it's been one miserable, even for here, winter. Only those late 70's ones are in the same ballpark. They had more vicious storms and colder spells. But even then I don't think the snow cover was so deep so long.
ReplyDeleteScott,
ReplyDeleteWhat is your take on the flood potential this weekend? Will it effect our area or is it more of a threat for the Buffalo area creeks?
I gotta say Scott you aren't shy about admitting a blown forecast. All winter I kept saying to myself "Where are those warm ups Hetsko promised ?"
ReplyDeleteAnyway I know it's almost impossible to forecast that far out. Last year though you were spot on with your winter forecast.
Doesn't that very strong negative ENSO that we have had for over 6 moths or so cause the type of pattern we have been in? There are signs that it is slowly breaking, but probably not soon enough to save spring.
Scott hetskos snow blower who do u work for?
ReplyDeleteScott,
ReplyDeleteAccording to the well respected Jeff Masters of Wunderground, this pattern, along with the snowstorms in the east, is all consistent with global warming. What say you?
I think as I said before this winter is a wrap. We will now be on the rain side of any storms. Next week looks warm which will take us to the 13th and we are home free. We will have to settle for that big storm that missed us and the one we got last Friday. Just like last year one synoptic storm for the winter.
ReplyDeleteScott - you said on air a couple of days ago that three of the top ten snow storms we've had have been in March. Can you list all ten? I'd love to see that!
