CLOUDY SEASON IS OVER IN ROCHESTER
Written by: Scott Hetsko
During Winter, Rochester and all of Western New York is one of the cloudiest places in the entire United States. You can see by the graph just how many days were cloudy in Rochester since December.
84 of 121 days (69%) of days were cloudy or mostly cloudy since December!
The good news is that the number of cloudy days have dropped since January. That trend is normal and will continue through Spring.
What makes us so cloudy during those months compared to the rest of the country?
ReplyDeleteMany things work in concert during the Winter. The jetstream is usually near us during Winter so the frequency of storms/fronts is higher during these months. Locally the Great Lakes play a large role too. Colder airmasses traveling over the warmer waters create clouds and snow often. Occasionally even when high pressure moves over the area, stratus clouds get trapped near the surface (subsidence inversion).
