Hottest Day of the Year??

Written by John DiPasquale:

We just may end up reaching the highest temperatures we've hit all year thus far later this afternoon. It's going to be close. The two times that Rochester has reached 90 or higher this year both were 91 degree days. I believe with enough sun we will not only hit 91, but quite possibly sneak past it by topping out at 92 or 93! This would not be a record high, but only a few degrees short of the record of 96 set back in 1936. Bottom line, if you are going to be outside today make sure to do what you can to stay cool, i.e. take a dip in the pool, lake &/or do the slip & slide. Keep yourself hydrated & be sure to dress in light weighted & colored clothing.

Later this afternoon & evening there will be a small chance of an isolated pop up storm, but for the most part it will remain dry through the rest of the day.

A prefrontal trough will cross the area tonight with a few widely scattered showers & storms possible, especially late. The strong cold front itself should blow here with MAYBE a storm or two to start Tuesday, otherwise tomorrow will be quiet with a good deal of sun developing along with a gusty west-northwest wind of somewhat cooler & drier air. As tomorrow progresses it will get more comfy.

Come tomorrow night into Wednesday & Thursday high pressure building in from Canada will be the provider of absolutely stunning weather!! I am expecting a good deal of sun, a refreshing breeze & temperatures that will be very comfortable! Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s both days.

By weeks end into the weekend there will be a small chance to pick up a couple of scattered showers/storm, but overall it still looks mainly dry right through the end of the week & upcoming weekend with warming temperatures. Stay tuned to News 8 for the latest.

  1. I think these annoying and stubborn clouds might hurt the chance of passing the 91 degree mark. It's 12:30 and still mostly cloudy. IF the clouds can break for lots of sun within the next hour, and then last through the rest of the afternoon, then maybe the air temp can make up for lost time. But it's going to be close for sure. I'm routing for 93F!

  2. It's 91 at the airport as of 2 o'clock, courtesy of the skies breaking for sunshine. But, more clouds are approaching from the BUF-NIA area. Will those clouds get here before KROC can make it into the 92 to 93 territory? We shall see.

  3. You were right, John! 3PM temperature at the Rochester airport is 92 degrees. Today IS the warmest day of the summer so far. Good call!!

  4. Thanks RocWXStudent! The mini drought aided in achieving the 94 at the airport yesterday afternoon. If we had the same air mass over us & the soil had some moisture to it we likely would have climbed no higher than the low 90s. Just like the last two times we hit 90+ on May 31st & June 8th when the soil was nice & moist. Enjoy the slightly cooler & drier air this afternoon everyone!
