FLOOD WATCH South & East of Rochester

Written by John DiPasquale:

A few scattered showers & drizzle will fall for the rest of today, but the majority of the significant rain will occur across the Eastern Finger Lakes in CNY & over the Southern Tier.

The plume of tropical moisture being pumped up by jet stream winds aloft out of the Carribean will attempt to pivot back to the northwest tonight, which could mean some more significant rains for the Greater Rochester area developing later tonight, especially just east of Rochester out across Wayne, Ontario, Yates & Seneca counties. Rainfall amounts by midday Thursday will most likely range from about three quarters of an inch to about two inches from Rochester to Dansville, but 2 to as much as 5 or 6 inches may very well accumulate in Ontario, Wayne, Yates & Seneca counties! This will likely result in some significant flooding, mainly east of the Rochester area, late today through Thursday, with maybe a bit of flooding here in Rochester. Stay tuned to News 8 for the latest regarding the flood potential & any flood warnings that may be issued over the next 24 to 36 hours.

The rain will slowly taper to a few scattered showers & drizzle during the day Thursday, as the remnants of Lee slowly falls apart over the Ohio River Valley Thursday night thru Saturday. This will allow our weather to continue to slowly improve, as an area of high pressure will likely swing in from the north & west which should provide a pretty good weekend. At this point, it looks like we could see some sun both Saturday & Sunday with just a very slight risk for a shower Saturday & a slightly better chance for a couple showers popping up later Sunday. With that being said, WNY & the northeast should get a nice reprieve from the rain for the most part this weekend. Temperatures will be fairly seasonable Friday through the weekend.
