More Rain, Possibly Heavy, on Tap

Written by John DiPasquale:

After a lull for many of us during much of this morning, more numerous showers & a few storms will likely build back in from the south during the afternoon along the cold/stationary front hanging out in WNY. Unfortunately, this boundary will act as a focal point for more periods of rain & a few storms with some downpours right into tonight. At this time, though, it appears the heaviest rains tonight will fall just off to the east of Rochester across the Finger Lakes & CNY where 1 to 2 or 3 inches may accumulate. These amounts of rain in such a short time would most likely cause some flooding & that's why the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch through Thursday morning for Yates & Seneca counties & points to the south & east for the potential of some flash flooding. Now, we will probably see some heavier rains at times here in Rochester too later today & tonight, but if this band of heaviest rains sets up 30 to 40 miles further west we could pick up some localized flooding here in the Greater Rochester area. We will keep you abreast. By the way, highs on this Wednesday will remain milder than average, as we will reach the low & mid 70s. Lows tonight will be near 60 with some fog developing too.

Come late tonight into Thursday morning we should experience a lull in the precipitation with maybe even some breaks of sun tomorrow morning. However, during the afternoon Thursday, the upper level storm that has been camped out near Chicago over the last almost week will finally be pushed in which should trigger some additional showers & storms, & a few of these storms may become strong to severe. Highs Thursday will be a bit cooler & more seasonable, as we will peak in the upper 60s to around 70.

Late Thursday night into early Friday the first of two strong cold fronts will pass through with a few scattered showers/storm. Friday's highs, despite some limited sun, will only hit the low 60s with a gusty breeze developing.

The next, reinforcing cold front will blow through Friday night/early Saturday with a few more showers/storm. In the wake of this front, it will be nasty with some lake showers, a blustery, gusty wind & highs struggling to climb out of the 40s! As a matter of fact, I would not be surprised to see some ice pellets & even occasional wet snow flakes mixing in with the showers Saturday, especially in the hills south of the thruway. Either way, this will not be a big deal, but just a reminder that the next season is winter. Thankfully, while still chilly & brisk, Sunday will be nicer with some sun returning & highs should make it well into the 50s.

Next week COULD feature some fantastic fall weather with more sun & unseasonably warm temperatures possibly building back into the northeast. Stay tuned.

Have a great day everyone!
