A closer look at the Memorial Day forecast

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

You surely could not complain about the weather this weekend. After suffering with the cool, damp weather all week, we more than made up for it with unlimited sunshine both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. 70's sure felt great on the skin too... it had been a while.

But with the big outdoor holiday on Monday, a lot of people have both eyes on the weather. Here's the collective thoughts of the Stormwatch 8 team:

Clouds will thicken during the morning hours. We see this period remaining dry for the most part, with exception to areas in extreme western New York (say over towards Buffalo.) Noon or so is the cutoff point where we then expect precipitation to begin falling from west to east. So if you live in Batavia, you'll want to eat lunch earlier than those in Sodus if you want things to have a better shot at staying dry.

We are also looking at a strong possibility for some thunderstorms by the afternoon. The strength of them is highly dependent on the cloud cover early in the day. The more sun we get early off, the more potential the storms will have to be stronger. Looking at the atmospheric conditions, our biggest concern in these storms will be strong, gusty winds in excess of 50 miles per hour at times. There is also a limited possibility for some hail as well. Not all areas will see a thunderstorm, but with the increased amount of outdoor activities on Memorial Day, we want to make sure everyone is as safe as they may be. Stay tuned to our website for further updates and keep an eye in the sky. Happy Grilling!
