Hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica as Gustav, which is still a tropical storm as of 2 p.m. EDT, slowly passes over the island. It is moving west at around 5 mph. Gustav’s sustained winds are just shy of hurricane force at 70 mph (74 would classify it as a category 1) with gust exceeding hurricane force. Like Haiti, the other main concern for Jamaica is torrential rain. The National Hurricane Center forecast 6 to 12 inches of rain with isolated amounts near 25 inches. These kind of rains can create life threatening situations like flash flooding, mud and landslides.
While Gustav passes over Jamaica it could strengthen back into a hurricane, as of the 2 p.m. EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center a reconnaissance plane was investigating Gustav.
