Gustav is Born with 60 mph Winds

(This is my favorite feature on Google Earth right now, NHC model plots on Google Earth)

Written by: Brian Neudorff

Here is how my day has gone with relationship to Tropical Gustav the 7th named storm of the 2008 Atlantic season. Between 8am and 10:30am EDT (when I wrote the last post “More Tropical trouble”) Gustav was just an area of interest or Invest-94L. As soon as I finished my blog post, invest-94L was upgraded by the NHC to tropical depression seven at 11am EDT.

Then as I was home with my kids winding down for the day, in just a mere 3 hours time, tropical depression seven become Tropical Storm Gustav with sustain winds of 60 mph. That is just 14 mph away from a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

As of 2pm, the NHC issued hurricane warnings for Hispaniola, and Gustav is expected to become a hurricane with in the next 24 hours.

As you can see in the Google Earth image above the models are all over the place and split on the forecasted path of Gustav. For the latest information please visit the National Hurricane Center website.
