EVEN MORE COLD & POSSIBLE LAKE EFFECT

Written by: Brian Neudorff

It's now December and we got our first snowfall of the season. Sure it wasn't much but it was a nice taste. It appears that more cold and snow could be on the way for the end of the week and into the weekend. Before we get that blast of arctic air will will warm up and get some rain for Wednesday night and Thursday.

A storm system currently in the south and along the Gulf Coast will move out of the Gulf, through the south and continue to move northeastward to the west of the Appalachians and toward the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday into Thursday.

We will first get a warm up starting on Wednesday as temperatures get into the low and potentially mid 50s. Wednesday will start off dry and sunny but by Wednesday night rain will arrive and will continue into Thursday. Late Thursday as the storm passes and continues to move to the northeast into Canada, colder arctic air will begin to flow in behind the passing storm. Some of the rain Thursday night into Friday could possibly change to snow but this storm doesn't look like it will be a big snow maker for us. The potential for snow could come from lake effect that might form in the wake of this storm in the cold air that flows in behind.

At this point it is way to early to say how much snow western New York will see. The potential is there with this scenario that some places could get some significant lake effect. It really depends on the conditions behind this system, how much cold actually arrives and where the winds set up any lake effect snow bands. If you have plans this weekend it would be a good idea to monitor the forecast just in case we get some good lake effect snow.
