RETURN OF COLD AIR

Written by: Brian Neudorff

After the "Mild" Christmas weekend, the last week of 2009 will feature some very cold and below average temperatures and the development of lake effect snow showers. First shot of colder air arrives later Sunday afternoon and evening as the cold front associated with the same storm that caused the blizzard in the Northern Plain and Upper Midwest moves to the north and east of Western New York. As this cold front moves through it will generate some snow across the region and could lay down a coating to 2 inches of snow by Monday morning.

The next shot of cold air arrives Monday afternoon, this secondary front will also looks like it will produce a burst of snow that could lay down another 1 to 3 inches of snow. The air behind this front is very cold. Temperatures will fall late Monday and by Tuesday will be lucky to get out of the teens for daytime highs.

Before the main polar vortex arrives Monday afternoon most of the winds off of the lakes will be either southwest or west but once the front moves through Monday afternoon the winds will begin to come out of the northwest. This will feature multiband lake effect snow showers coming off Lake Ontario into parts of Orleans, Monroe and Wayne county.

  1. The models have backed down on the intensity of the East Coast storm next weekend and move most of the storm to our East. I know that totally shocks everyone that we will miss out on yet another snowstorm. If the GFS holds true Eastern, NY could get buried leaving us with the nickle and dime lake effect that we will get over the next few days.
