COLD AND SNOWY THE NEXT 10 DAYS

Written By: Scott Hetsko
What a weekend of weather in Western New York! As always with lake effect, wide variability in snow amounts between the lakeshore and just 10 miles to the South. At my house, I had a total of 6.5" since Friday. Can you guess where I live? Anyway moving forward I expect a continuation of occasional snow as cold, moist air continues to pour over Lake Ontario this week. Several little upper air disturbances will enhance the snow, the first one comes through overnight and early Tuesday. Lakeside towns may get over 6" again tonight and early Tuesday with lesser amounts South.
Snow showers will fall throughout the week but a reinforcing shot of bitter cold air circulating around another low could spell more heavy lake snows for the upcoming weekend. It's too early to say but I'd expect another 1-2 feet potentially over a 3 day period within 4 miles of the lake this weekend. No real end to the cold until perhaps late January, until then keep your shovel nearby and the mittens on the radiator!

  1. Scott,
What an incredible pattern. You're going to nail the winter forecast when you said January will be the coldest and snowiest period. I can tell you that, right now. In terms of the city itself, I know it's a really hard call because we sit just outside of where the heaviest snow traditionally falls north of the 104, but do you think the heavier stuff will slip down into the ROC metro for enough time to start to really pile things up even in the city within the next week?

  2. Hey Scott, Do you have a current snow total for the Wolcott/Red Creek area? I think I heard close to the 50 inch mark?

  3. I live in West Henrietta. This is so frustrating....heavy, deep snow to the North, West, and East....only a few inches where I live. I don't think I'm going to see more than 4 inches of snow per event in my town the rest of the winter.

  4. The same area that got hit by the persistent band over the weekend, across Niagara, N. Erie and into Orleans county, is looking to be favored right now, based on the radar. Don't tell me they rob us of our snow all over again.

  5. yep, i see that band setting up in niagara county almost exactly the same way it did over the weekend, with virturally nothing making it east to us. Scott, what is making this happen again? Sometimes I wonder if Rochester is involved in cloud seeding, causing all the snow to be forced in every direction around us, but not us.
