THE WEEK AHEAD & KEEP THE SNOW REPORTS COMING

Written by: Brian Neudorff

The above graphic represents snow reports we have seen from the National Weather Service and from all of you who have emailed and commented on here about your snow totals. Snow amounts tend to be sparse during the early mornings. The most recent amount as of 4:45 am from the National Weather Service in Buffalo was 26.5" reported in Williamson in Wayne county. From the News 8 at Sunrise Facebook page we got a report of 24 to 30 inches in the Village of Red Creek We would love to hear how much snow you've received just tell us your location, how much snow in inches and if you want your first name and we might mention you on the air.

Monday looks a little less active than the weekend. Light lake effect will continue off the southern and southeastern shores of Lake Ontario as a storm system off the coast of Maine continue to flow very cold and moist air into Western New York. The bands should not be as intense today as they were over the weekend. Most places in Orleans, Monroe and Wayne county should see just an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow from some bands with 2 to 4 inches along the NY route 104 corridor.

This pattern of cold air flowing into Western New York will continue through most of the week. Temperatures will moderate upwards by Wednesday and Thursday as highs reach the mid 20s but impulses of upper level energy will pinwheel through to help spark burst of snow tonight and into Tuesday. Could see a break in some of the snow on Wednesday but a weak system appears to move out of the Plains Thursday night into Friday followed by more cold heading into the weekend with highs once again back into the teens.

  1. Morning, Brian.
I see the WRF depict a burst of snow along the south shore of Lake Ontario tonight. Will this be one of those deals where once the sun sets the snow starts to pick up through the evening and into the night? Are we looking at near advisory level snows tonight with this burst? It seems that with the very fluffy snow, it shouldn't take much to add up a good 4 or 5 inches.

    Thanks in advance.

BTW, about 10 inches from Friday thru today on the east side of the city (blossom / winton area)

  2. Good morning, thanks for your comment. We agree that there will be that burst of snow later tonight as a short wave moves south across the lake. Most of the snow will fall along the shore lines. As of now we are thinking 3 to 6 inches from the city north to along the shore with the communities along and closest to the shore seeing the most and the city less. If you are in Southern Monroe your looking at just another 1 to 3 inches of fluff.

There is currently a Lake Effect Snow Advisory for Wayne Co until 10pm Tuesday. Along the 104 corridor some places will easily see 6 if not up to 10 inches in the northeastern corner of Wayne county that was hit hard over the weekend.

  3. I know some posters have gotten frustrated by this nickel and dime stuff...but you all have to admit, with the lack of any thaw, it's really going to start to pile up around here. And you know, over 9 inches at the airport ain't that bad. In fact, the totals are right on with with Scott Hetsko and the channel 8 / fox weather team predicted. Excellent job, considering how tough these mesoscale things are to predict. Keep it up!

  4. The totals are not what Scott forecasted:

He forecasted 3-6 inches and then 4-8 inches that is 7-12 inches in northern Wayne county we have 30 inches so far for the storm almost 3 times what he forecasted

  5. You're wrong about my numbers but you're right in that I didn't forecast what some got in Northern Wayne County. I did mention that lake towns would likely get over a foot in that area on Friday night. I can pull that tape if you want. By the way, today's snow doesn't count in my weekend snow forecast. Bottom line, I expect better of myself and I'll strive to do better going forward. FYI no one got it completely right....

  7. From a general sense, I got the feeling from your forcasts that we could expect a large lake effect (enhanced) event starting this past Sat/Sun, which is exactly what we got. You guys did a great job as always. Keep up the good work!
