DEEP FREEZE STRIKES DIXIE!

Written By: Scott Hetsko
January is usually cold but this is ridiculous! Huge Arctic high pressure will pour bitter cold air deep into Florida over the weekend. Temperatures will fall into the teens as far South as Gainsville by Sunday morning. Citrus growers are sweating this one out, you might be paying a little more for your orange juice in the weeks to come.
Back home, lake snow will accumulate 3-5" of fluffy tonight and Saturday near and North of the thruway. Drier air and high pressure will insure that no one will see snow numbers like last weekend.

  1. Hi guys. Where's El Nino hiding? Is he going to make an appearance this winter or are we in the cold until April?

  2. It's not only El Nino but a negative NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) that has been the main driver of our weather in North America. The NAO is forecast to slowly head back into positive territory later next week. This should mean at least a return to normal or slightly above normal air. I still expect a significant warm up to occur sometime in February.

  3. Scott,
I was going to ask about why we're not in an advisory, but you already mentioned it on air. I agree. I'm sure areas of Niagara and Orleans counties have already had advisory criteria snow, with another several inches of fluff to come. Yet no advisory. It's curious indeed.

  4. The GFS has been pretty steady in advertising an East Coast storm next week, but keeping it just South of us. I know this will change several times, but it has not backed down from it. I know it is a shocker that we could miss another snowstorm.

  5. Scott,
I just got back from spendiing an evening in the city. The snow is really starting to add up. It hasn't stopped snowing since sundown, and snowing moderate to heavy at times. I can't believe the NWS didn't end up issuing an advisory. But don't worry, they have a special weather statement....For BUFFALO! Is the NWS giving ROC the silent treatment? lol

  6. Nothing new, they seemingly always miss issuing advisories especially for Orleans but sometimes Monroe as well. I expect another 2-4" of fluffy snow before it winds down overnight into the morning hours of Saturday.

  7. Scott,
What is that odd feature streaking down from canada? It looks like a short wave, but I didn't know any were supposed to pass through.

  8. In gananda we pickes up about 7 inches of fluff. What happended to the NWS? They missed the boat. Channel 8 was the most acuarte saying 3-5. The other stations said 1-2.
