As of writing this at 9 AM EST over three-quarters of inch of rain had fallen out at the Greater Rochester International Airport. Add an inch to that total and you get Buffalo's total. Flood watch continues for Western New York into Monday evening. There are a few creeks and streams in the western and southern part of Western New York that are experiencing high waters and potential flooding.
Rain will begin to lessen and become light and scattered into the afternoon. We will also say goodbye to the mild temperatures and the January Thaw as a cold front works across the state later today. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s by the late afternoon and evening.
The arrival of the colder air will signal a return to winter. The colder air that arrives tonight into Wednesday is just round one. Initially the snow we see later tonight into Tuesday morning will be from moisture wrapping around the departing storm system. The bad news for all the snow lover not much snow is expected tonight and Tuesday morning.
Some lake effect will begin Tuesday afternoon but winds out of the southwest will keep most of the snow southwest of Rochester. Wednesday will have some flakes around but should be relegated to the southeast corner of Lake Ontario. This snow could impact parts of Wayne County especially the northeastern corner.
Looking ahead, the trend of colder air arriving Thursday continues to look good. Another weak system associated with the Arctic front could spread some snow across the area then Lake Effect will kick in Thursday night into Friday. At this point, I know many of you who want snow will ask but as of now it's too early to know who and how much will get snow by the end of the week.
Do you realize we haven't had one single synoptic snowstorm? Why are we missing ALL of the synoptic snow storms? We'll never get to average snowfall with this nickel and dime crap.
