SOUTHERN TIER GETS THE MOST FRIDAY

Written By: Scott Hetsko
The week long advertised light snowfall for Friday is still on track to start just before sunrise Friday morning. Given the speed and track of this system, up to 3-6" of snow is possible in the Southern Tier counties by late Friday afternoon. Only about 1-2" is likely for Friday along the lake but then lake snow showers develop Friday night and continue on Saturday.
There will be high snow to water ratios so 3-6" of snow can easily pile up along the shore before a crashing inversion limits instability Saturday afternoon and evening. Fine flurries and light snow may continue Saturday night and Sunday but we for sure will see nothing like last weekend along the shore of Ontario. Signs of a zonal flow and as a result much milder weather here by mid week. Could it be a mini January thaw?

  1. Hi Scott
What does inversion mean and what does it mean when it crashes?

  3. I was hoping someone would ask that. A temperature inversion is a thin layer of the atmosphere where the decrease in temperature with height is much less than normal (or in extreme cases, the temperature increases with height). An inversion lowering over time dramatically limits the ability of air to rise, squashing in effect lake effect snow.

  4. Very cool. I've heard that word used before but had no idea what it meant. Thanks!
