COLD STAYS AROUND MOST OF FEBRUARY
Written By: Scott Hetsko
If we're not going to get hit with a big snow then I think most would at least like to see a break in the cold weather. That's not going to happen for at least the next week or two. Cold Canadian high pressure will remain to our West while Low pressure will linger in Eastern Canada. These systems combined will help feed a fresh supply of cold air across our area through next week. There will be the occaional weak disturbance that will touch off some light snow but there are no large weather systems to watch through next Wednesday.
Snow amounts from today were a little smaller than expected except for the Southern Tier where the inverted trough help enhance snow there for a while. This evening just some wrap around snow and snow showers which will only add up to 1-3" in a few spots by morning.
It's not going to happen for us this year, is it Scott...
ReplyDelete"Snow amounts from today were a little smaller than expected"
ReplyDeleteCome on, Scott. I love you guys and usually you do a good job predicting, but "a little smaller"? This storm was a complete dud, bust, and joke!! What happened to the 4-8 or even 2-5? I have LESS THAN A HALF INCH ON THE GROUND HERE IN WEST HENRIETTA!!!! I don't expect much LES at all where I live tonight.... Wow! A half an inch!!!! What will I do with it all? Should we declare a "snow emergency"????
Wow, if we can't even muster a few inches with a storm, there is no hope, really. Great...back to cold highs in the 20s and "30-40 percent chance of snow showers". I almost puke now when I hear the NWS saying that. I can't wait to hear, "Sunny and warm today with highs in the 70s".
I have never experienced a winter like this before...never. And I hope I never do again. Give me 50s and rain all winter long over this, please!
Congrats DC! YOU WILL HAVE MORE SNOW THAN ROCHESTER WHEN IT'S ALL DONE!!! WOW!!!!
Scott,
ReplyDeleteIf you're one of those folks starving for a huge snow, today has got to be one of the most heart breaking days to see big snows happen in all directions...even Michigan and Ohio got hit pretty hard. I think what is most heart breaking is that, unlike the last several years, each snow storm would COULD have received would not have melted, and it would have just piled and pilied and piled deeper. Anyway, Scott, are you still hopeful that we could get our doozy of a storm before the winter is out?
What is it about far western new york, across the Niagara Frontier, that makes them almost always get more snow than us, no matter what the weather setup is? The snow just finds a way to stick around longer near Buffalo no matter what.
ReplyDeleteNow to be fair, most of the 4-8" area we forecasted did get 2-5" so it wasn't a bust forecast and to be honest we were saying over and over about this not being a big deal. I admit that the 2-5" didn't happen for us but it easily could have if that band of snow were 40 miles further North. That the breaks this Winter I guess.
ReplyDeleteThere is a northern stream storm for a change thats coming...I suppose that's going to miss us next week too, right?
ReplyDeleteAs for the forecast, everybody forecasted at least two inches or more, even for Rochester. And that includes the NWS. All models were very consistent by the end at showing qpf that would align with that. There is only so much a human can do to predict what will happen. Storms like these almost always throw us a surprise in terms of where the banding sets up. Anyway, Scott do you think there is still time for Rochester to get buried, or are things looking worse and worse in the long term?
ReplyDeleteLet's see who has gotten big snows this year:
ReplyDeleteNew England? Check
Ontario Canada, North of us? Check
Michigan and Ohio West of us? Check
Pennsylvania South of us? Check
Mid Altantic? Check
Carolinas? Check
Midwest? Check
Deep South and Plains? Check
Rochester? NO CHECK!!!! Heartbreaking and very, very depressing to be so isolated in this department. I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It just doesn't want to snow hard here. I don't know why, I don't know how....but there is a force, some kind of force, deflecting all the storms to the North, South, East, West of us. Someone must be praying really hard for us to miss out on snow this winter. Congrats. You win.
I hear ya, man. Maybe the Russians are cloud seeding around us lol. But in all seriousness, it has to do with the major blocking to our north, but it's still no excuse because areas at our same lattitude have still gotten buried. It really is wierd, and time is running out. Scott I know its your job to act professional about all of this, but isn't this depressing you? I know you're a snow lover too. It must remind you of living back in Scranton!
ReplyDeleteWe only received a dusting in Wayne County and MOnroe County. What happened?????
ReplyDeleteGues what. It looks like another East Coast storm will mis us on MOnday again. This is getting too funny. DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore will all have more snow than Rochester this year. Those of you that disagreed with me last week. The rest of February looks cold but boring with all storms heading South of us. March could go either way, but my guess is March will be snowless as well. 80 inches of snow for Rochester this year is my guess. That will come fom nickle and dime snow like we have had all year.
ReplyDeleteThe strong upward motion associated with the original low pressure didn't occur as far North as forecast last night. As a result the band of 2-5" snow fell about 30-40 miles further South than I expected. In Meteorology, 40 miles in snow forecasting is like a drop of water in Lake Ontario. A minor shift makes a HUGE difference. And that's the way it was....
ReplyDeleteTypical for this year Scott. Anything and everything happens to prevent us from getting snow. It is getting to be a broken record.
ReplyDeleteIn further defense of my forecast, the 2-5" I forecast was until noon tomorrow! We might get 1-2" overnight from lake snow showers/wrap around.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I'm concerned, this was a busted forecast anyway you slice it by every MET and the NWS. It happens a lot in weather forecasting, like it or not. We forgive, we move on.
ReplyDeleteYesiree boys it really looks like fun down there in DC--wish it were us. You gotta be kidding. 50 car pile ups, everything closed, no power--gee I wish we got that.
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful it wasn't us getting "it" for once. Better things to do than dig for a week and spend an extra hour getting anywhere I want to go.
Keep missing PLEASE. 6 weeks to go!!
Not to be a party pooper, but I am so glad the storms are missing us. Growing up in the 60's and 70's, we had our share of Blizzards. I am just thankful for the break Western New York is getting.
ReplyDeleteI hope the rest of the winter remains the same.
Sorry snow lovers :)
