CONDENSED SNOW SEASON THIS WINTER

Written By: Scott Hetsko

Winter can seem like a long time here in Rochester but not this year. While we did get our fair share of snow along with a few shots of cold, Winter really was 7-9 weeks long. There has NEVER been a Winter when both November AND March recorded no measurable snow going back to 1884! It appears that our chances of seeing snow in March are dwindling.

There will be a shot of colder air arriving Thursday afternoon into the weekend. The heart of this cold shot will slide into Northern New England and miss Western New York. There may be some flurries but I don't expect any lake effect to kick in.

  1. Scott,
Have you been monitoring the situation in Iceland? More and more experts are fearing that the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull on Saturday is setting the stage for what could be an enormously powerful volcanic eruption from the katla volcano nearby in Iceland. In fact, history shows that the one volcano NEVER erupts without the other following close behind. That's startling! And to further confirm the fears is that earthquakes are increasing in the area. If Katla blows, this will change weather patterns and very likely thrust the northern hemisphere into a mini ice age - and abruptly. The momentum is already there for it, so it won't take much. And another significant fact is that this would be another high lattitude volcano, which would produce vicious blocking at the poles next winter, that would make this winter's negative AO look pathetic. Anyway, here's the article. Must read:

  3. Wow scary article if it came true.

Scott what are the chances of this really happening? Is it a real concern?

  4. There certainly can be significant cooling as a result of a major eruption but that must occur first for us to know or predict how our weather will behave in the years to follow. I've been watching with much interest. I wouldn't say a mini ice age would result but a few very cold years are possible depending on how much sun blocking ash was spewed into the troposphere.
