SOME TV WEATHERCASTER DOUBT WARMING

Written by: Brian Neudorff

A couple months ago Meteorologist Bob Metcalfe, myself and possibly Chief Meteorologist Scott Hetsko (Can't confirm yes at the current time) took part in a study conducted by George Mason University and the University of Texas at Austin regarding our thoughts on Climate change. The preliminary results from this study were posted on Monday (this is a .pdf file). Then on Tuesday, the New York Times did a story on the studies findings.

Here is some information from the actual study, out of the 571 television weathercasters who were surveyed more than half (54%) indicated that global warming is happening, 25% indicated it isn’t, and 21% say they don’t know yet. About one-third (31%) reported that global warming is caused mostly by human activities, while almost two-thirds (63%) reported it is caused mostly by natural changes in the environment.

Over half of weathercasters indicated that humans could reduce global warming (58%), and that the U.S. should reduce greenhouse gas emissions regardless of what other countries do (63%). Almost half (47%) felt they needed some or a lot more information before forming a firm opinion about global warming, and almost one-third (30%) said they could easily change their mind about global warming. Just over one quarter (27%) agreed with the statement by a prominent TV weathercaster: “global warming is a scam.”

  1. Hi Brian,
Which weather caster stated that global warming was a scam? John Coleman? Joe D'Aleo? Tom Skilling?

  2. I've heard John Coleman say that. Not sure about the others.

  3. Global Warming is a scam!!!! How quickly we forgot about the warnings of Global Cooling back in the '70's. I can remember being very frightened that the world was going to enter another ice age because of the idiot scientist's predictions. Come on, "a rose by any other name".

  5. If your doctor sends you to a specialist for a problem, do you whip out articles in Time magazine and argue about the treatment options he recommends because they aren't the same as they were 35 or 40 years ago? How come people who think global warming is a scam believe that 35-year-old scare articles from the popular press prove their point?

Climate science didn't stand still for 35 years! You must be aware that we have satellites that can make global measurements, systems set up to take various measurements all over the ocean as well as on land, and computers that can better handle the immense calculations needed to generate climate models. A lot of basic science knowledge about how climate works simply didn't exist in the 1970s. Now that the cumulative quantitative effect of all that science in all kinds of fields - not just meteorology - is adding up, organizations like NOAA, the EPA, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Meteorological Society, etc can show evidence of warming, and its man-made origins with a confidence they didn't have years ago.

Those old Time articles don't have anything to do with today's science. But if you need to see an argument that deals with that topic directly, check out this one - http://www.skepticalscience.com/ice-age-predictions-in-1970s.htm
