SEVERE SEASON WAKING UP IN THE EAST

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

Well FINALLY we have some more interesting SPRING weather to look forward to. I highlighted Spring because snow in late April isn't my idea of fun.

Now this is a stretch but the image at left is the day 4 SPC outlook for a severe weather probability of 30% or more. I know, I know, our area isn't covered in this, but it is getting closer.

A vigorous low-level jet will develop over the next few days and combine with summer-like heat and Gulf moisture to create widespread severe weather through the nation's mid-section and even into the east by Friday, Saturday, and maybe even Sunday. Our area (WNY) lies on the northernmost extent of the reach of this system, so areas to the south will have the highest chance for stronger storms. Again, this is a long way out for thunderstorm forecasting, but the setup is looking more and more promising along the eastern half of the US by this weekend, despite the bulk of the activity remaining well to our South.

We'll of course keep you updated via this blog over the coming days. For now, enjoy true Spring weather in Rochester!
