FLOODING RAIN TENNESSEE - LACK OF RAIN ROCHESTER

Written by: Brian Neudorff

Over the weekend it seemed like the rain wouldn't move. More than a foot of rain saturated parts of Tennessee on Saturday and Sunday, including in Nashville. Nashville and Bowling Green, Ky., both received their greatest two-day rainfall totals since records have been kept in the late 1800s, with 13.53 and 9.67 inches, respectively.

Many communities are underway, numerous roads and state highways closed because of flood waters and at least 11 people have died in TN because of storms & flooding.

The rain shifts to the east from Alabama to Carolinas where some could see 4 to upwards of 6 inches of rain.

Back to Rochester and western New York, we are lacking in the rain. Since March 1st, Rochester has only had 3.65 inches of precipitation, most of that rain. That is nearly 2 inches below average for the spring season where on average see 5.51"

Because of the lack of precipitation this spring we are 1.60" below for the year. We saw some rain this morning but not enough and there is rain in the forecast for later this week. Not sure we will recover by the end of the week or this weekend but it will help.

  1. This patterns seems like a continuation of what we had over the winter...at least with regard to storms avoiding us every which way. It seems like over the last year, widespread storms just don't want anything to do with Western New York.

On one hand, we're fortunate, because such devastating floods and tornados and city-crippling blizzards would have a really miserable impact on our lives and local economy. But c'mon. This boring, nickel and dime kind of weaher we've been having for months now, is really getting old. I've almost forgotten what the doppler radar looks like with widespread and heavy precip covering the entire area with plenty more upstream. Just doesn't happen.

I hope we make up for lost time starting around November....
