A TOP 5 EARTHQUAKE FOR NEW YORK
Written By: Scott Hetsko
In California a 5.0 quake would barely be news, here it was a top 5 quake! According to the USGS, about 800 5.0 to 5.9 earthquakes occur around the world each year. For us in the New York area, it's rare.
Yesterday's quake was the 5th strongest in recorded history in our region. The last one occurred in 2002 although many weaker quakes are more common. The 5.8 quake in 1944 caused alot of damage near it's epicenter and some damage in our area. The richter scale is a logaritmic scale so for each whole number increase, the strength is 10 times more!
Scott, where were you when the quake happened? Did you feel it?
