Northeast record highs

Many records went down in the Northeast on Wednesday due to the massive ridge we are currently under and the mostly clear skies. These factors are the key players in igniting a heat wave. All of the areas pictured on the right experienced record high temperatures for their area. Washington D.C. hit 102 this afternoon along with New York City topping out at 100. More important than temperature though is the heat index, where in New York City hit 107 today, making it one of the highest heat indexes in the US. These highs are not associated with global warming though as this is just a warm weather pattern occurring in our region. Luckily, for those who dislike the heat, cooler weather is on the way as there is a low pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean. Lows, which rotate counterclockwise, will bring in cooler air from the ocean to the Northeast US. There is also a cold front that is slowly coming in towards the Ohio area that will bring temperatures down as it pushes eastward. For our area, we can expect the heat wave to end by the weekend and get back to more comfortable temperatures.
