NEXT WEEK'S WARM UP

Written by: Brian Neudorff

You can call me what you will but I am ready, yes I am ready for warmer temps. I love winter, I love snow but with out it's just cold and that is all we have seen it feels this winter.

Stacey had a great post yesterday about the cold, so today I am going to talk about the upcoming warm up.

Both the EURO and GFS show nice warm-up with 850s near 10 C. That could have a high near 50 on Friday of next week. We already have a 40 on the 7-day for Wednesday. I am ready for a break from the cold, how about you?

  1. As I try to understand computer models, ie GFS/NAM, could some please explain to me what the northern-most red line (labeled 546) is? Is that the 32 degree line? Thanks for the help.

  2. I'm with you, Brian. I love cold and snow, but i'm ready for it to go away. This is the earliest in the year that I have wanted spring to come. The cold has been relentless, and the snow has been wimpy. So, bring on the warmth. Another early, bonus spring where the lilacs were blooming by mid April would be great!

  3. anybody notice its still light out at like 5:30? spring is just around the corner. we got alot of snow on the ground and all our creeks and streams are frozen solid so its gonna take awhile to melt it all. might as well get an early start on it. bring on 50!

  4. Just think...last spring on April 2nd, it hit 86 degrees in Rochester. 4 degrees shy of a 90 degree day on the second day of April. That's the kind of weather i'm rooting for this spring. I want one more shot of a big snowstorm before then tho...

  5. Sorry guys, it is still winter. I want more snow. We have a nice snowpack out there and it looks like we will lose a lot of it next week. I still want some storms. Not ready for spring until it is spring. This is the first winter I can remember that we have had snow cover almost the whole time. That is what winter should be. Consistent cold and snow.

  6. If you like this winter with all the constant cold and snow, Anonymous, then you're going to LOVE the next few winters to come. As cold if not colder than this year, and a return of many synoptic snowstorms in addition to the usual lake effect.

  7. I love to ski so I am a little disappointed with the projected warm up. Im still liking our chances for a big storm soon enough around here, and everyone can say they want spring to come, but if another big storm is in the making for our area, you know there isnt going to be much complaining around here!!

  8. I am surprised to hear people say they want it to warm up. We are only at 92 inches. I would like to see a 120-130 inch winter this year. It is possible if we see a few storms. I hope it is not like last year when winter abruptly stopped in February with no snow in March at all.

  9. With an extended pattern change looming that will last through the second half of February, it's going to be tough to get another 30-40 inches to reach that total. I think we may get one shot of extended cold in early March. With that, there may be one final snowstorm opportunity. But still, 100 to 115 might just about do it for the season.

  13. I really enjoy watching the snow fall...Even if we have yet to have a real big synoptic snow here in the Rochester area.

I drove from Newark to Sodus the other day. I know its only 12 miles, but the snow total difference is amazing. I realized then that even though I enjoy it, I sure as hell don't miss it. I will stay in Newark where we can see a foot less than Sodus....

    Bring on Spring

  17. Anyone know if this 'heat wave' will hit the adirondaks? last thing they need is 50 deg.

  18. The Adirondacks will get milder, as well. But it's all relative. Their milder temps will not be as mild as we get in WNY since they're farther north and higher elevation. 45-50 for Rochester would likely be 35-40 for the Adidondacks. It will likely be a very slow and orderly thaw for most of us, and especially the Adirondack region. One thing that could change things is if we get a rain storm on top of the melting snow. There is already 2 to 3 inches of liquid equivalent in the snowpack, so if we get a steady rain that dumps 1 to 2 inches on top of that melting snow, then creeks and streams could fill up quickly, not to mention ice jam flooding since most of the smaller creeks and streams are iced over.

BUT..before you freak out, there is no heavy rain storm in the forecast. Just outlining possibilities. A slow and orderly thaw looks very likely.
