NORTHERN LIGHTS SHOW
Looking for something to do Friday night? Look to the Northern sky! Scientists say a recent solar flare is causing radio disruptions in the atmosphere, which may allow the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights to be visible from the Northern U.S. In fact, the light show could be visible as far south as Washington, D.C.
The weather in Rochester will be ideal for viewing Friday night, with mainly clear skies, but clouds will increase after midnight, with snow showers developing. Grab a jacket, good luck, and happy viewing!
I think that you have snow on your mind... in the first paragraph you say Washington DC is going to get light snow.
ReplyDeleteGood catch. Sounds like a mistake I would make.
ReplyDeleteMorning Stacey,
I see there's a Wind Advisory for the area through Tomorrow. I was thinking about traveling along the lake Ontario shore tomorrow to take some winter photos. How much worse could the winds be along the immediate lake shore with this event?
Looks like storm Monday will be well south and once again nothing for us.
ReplyDeleteAgain, Anonymous, I don't know where you get your information, but if you're the same person who keeps saying "storm will be south and miss us" you keep stating the opposite of what the models are ever showing. This is the latest GFS model for Monday morning. Where are you getting a miss for us?

DK not sure if I am reading them right but I agree with you. What forecast would you put out right now knowing the current data and fully understanding things could change.
ReplyDelete@ anonymous (the first post)- Maybe you have snow on the mind. She said light SHOW.
ReplyDeleteThere was a typo, we all make them and I was here when Stacey corrected it.

Harold,
ReplyDeleteLet me first say i'm NOT a meteorlogist. I'm just an astute weather enthusiast. But IF I were to create a forecast today based on exactly what I see on the latest models it would go like this:
There will be a sharp contrast between precipitation type from north to south with this one. I'd forecast all snow for the lake Ontario Bordering counties (Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne...) with 4 to 7 inches likely there. The higher end of that range will be across the northern half of each of those counties, including the Rochester metro. From the corridor between the thruway and routes 5&20, 3 to 5 looks more likely because a mix with sleet and rain will keep snowfall totals down just a bit. Best chance for the 5" would be right along the thruway. The best chance for the lower end of 3" would be right along routes 5&20. South of routes 5&20 it will likely be a sloppy mix of snow initially, changing over to a mix of wet snow, sleet and rain/freezing rain. About two inches will probably do it if you live JUST south of routes 5&20, with lesser amounts the further south you go toward to southerntier. Dansville, for example, may only see about 1 inch of snow, with the majority of their precip being sleet and freezing rain. Places like Bath, NY may not even see one inch, as a full changeover to rain looks likely there before the snow is able to accumulate much.
No biggie with the typo. It's an endearing mistake.
ReplyDeleteDK, I agree with you if that storm stays on track. But, if it nudges a little further north, freezing rain may become an issue for some areas. It's hard to tell since the temperature profiles fluctuate countless times on the models. However, if I were a meteorologist broadcasting to my viewers, I would play it safe and say a mix of snow and sleet with a modest amount of accumulation. For some reason though, I have a good feeling about the next storm down the pipeline, which looks to hit by the end of next week! Its been a crazy winter, and I hope it keeps up!
ReplyDeleteYep, definitely looks like a very active storm pattern will be setting up by next week and beyond. Cold air will simultaneously be trying to filter back into the northeast. Gonna be an interesting one to two weeks ahead for sure.
ReplyDeleteUpdate for the next event? I hope winter does make a comeback.
ReplyDeleteLove having Stacey here on 8, but what happened to the other weather person. Did he go somewhere else? I must have missed something. Hope you will answer me. I'm a former Canuk so this weather doesn't scare me. Just put another blanket on.

First off I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question in
ReplyDeletewhich I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out. I do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Cheers!
