A WINTER DECADES IN THE MAKING

Written by: Stacey Pensgen

Has this winter seemed relentlessly cold? You're not imagining it! December started and ended mild, with temperatures reaching the 50s, but constant cold was sandwiched in between. In fact, the month came in more than 3 degrees below the average.

Next up: January. We rang in the new year with 56 degrees, but it was mostly downhill from there. We felt below zero temperatures 3 days in January with lows plummeting to -8 toward the end of the month. Overall, January wasn't as below average as December, winding up 2 degrees below the norm.

So far, February has come in chilly as well, with an average temperature a little over 1 degree colder than normal. That number will grow over the next few days, with highs only in the upper teens and lower 20s, and lows in the single digits. But, we've been talking about a warm up, and we should see temperatures bounce back into the 30s and 40s later next week. Think warm!

  1. Hi Stacey,
I say bring on the warmth. What time of the year will our average high go up to around 50?

  2. Nice summary of a bad winter.
After the little warm up do you see another plummet going into March?
    Hope not.

  3. This potential warm up is making me anxious. I have a week long snowmobile vacation planned for the week after next at my camp in Oswego Co. Will cold and snow return for President's week? Or, better yet, will the warm up be brief?

  4. Okay, as a snow lover I can appreciate a little bit of a mid winter warm up. But please NO RAIN!

I'm still holding out hope that we can have a big snow storm. Feb, Mar and even April have all had them. But by April the snow novelty has pretty much worn out and I'm ready for a nice warm spring.
