First Accumulating Snow Yesterday!

Written by John DiPasquale: Well, the first accumulating snow occured for many late yesterday afternoon into last evening when a coating to inch fell. This picture to the left, though, showcases where some of the heaviest snow fell in WNY down in Wyoming County in the town of Portagville where about 3" of snow accumulated thanks to Lake Erie. The second snow pic was taken in Honeoye by our evening producer here at News 8. Most of the snowfall late yesterday into early last night was not from lake effect, but a fairly healthy disturbance that moved through. Areas East-Southeast of Lake Ontario & Erie were the regions to be affected by several inches of lake snow, especially East of Lake Ontario. Not as much fell East of Erie. Either way, I'm sure snow lovers out there are feeling a little better after all the mild weather we've had lately. Yes, the snow will melt away quickly, if it's not gone already, as temperatures will warm solidly into the 40s with a brisk, but moderating southwest wind developing for the afternoon. We will also have a decent amount of sun blending with some lake clouds from Lake Erie here in the Greater Rochester area.

A warm front will clear the area later tonight allowing a warming southwest breeze to really take hold come our Saturday. We will also have a good deal of sun for much of Saturday making it feel even better! The bad thing about the gusty breeze Saturday & Sunday is that feel like readings will be down into the 40s, but it will definitely feel more comfy than yesterday & today. So enjoy! There may be a shower or two late Saturday night into Sunday as a cold front approaches & should make it's way through Sunday afternoon. This will cause the temperatues to drop from a midday high in the mid 50s back into the upper 40s by days end Sunday with a colder wind developing behind the front.

Monday will start off cold & quiet with some sun, but clouds should increase pretty quickly with a bit of rain possibly developing later in the day, which may even mix with a bit of snow, especially over the higher terrain right into Monday night.

Some sun & low to mid 40s will be felt Tuesday following the weak low & disturbance Monday.

Then the BIG QUESTION is...How does the biggest travel day of the year look for all the travelers Wednesday? Well, it looks like there will be a storm intensifying off to the South & East of the area, but the big question is the exact track & intensity of this possible nor'easter. The Euro is suggesting some snow &/or rain & wind from it Wednesday, while the GFS another trusted long range forecast model is pointing toward keeping it just off to our South & East. However, usually the Euro has a better track record with storms & their ultimate tracks. Something we will definitely have to watch very closely in the coming days. Stay tuned.

Right now, Turkey Day is looking pretty good, but it's still almost a week away, so keep it here & we'll keep you posted.

Stay warm everyone & enjoy your weekend!

  1. I hope last night woke everyone up and shut the skeptics up about how were not going to get snow and how its going to be a mild winter. It's mid-November and we all know the models are only reliable 3-5 days out, so everyone needs to be patient as John stated above! I know everyone is fairly educated on this blog when it comes to reading/interpreting the models, but I think we all need to not get hung up when they don't go our way. We have 3 solid months of winter ahead, its not panic time yet!

  3. very useful and informative blog

  4. It looks like that Tuesday-Wednesday storm is more likely, but there is not enough cold air for snow. It will be mostly rain with maybe a little snow at the end.
