Quiet, Boring Weather Continues

Written by John DiPasquale:

More clouds slowly, but surely will blend, & at times entirely block out the sun, especially this afternoon. Reason for the clouds...A backdoor cold front trying to sneak in from the North, & a weak upper air disturbance passing through. Neither one will produce any precipitation though today. Highs will make the low 40s.

After another chilly, quiet night tonight, I do expect more clouds to build in later Wednesday with maybe even a shower or two moving in by dinner time. It will turn a bit breezy & milder Wednesday afternoon with highs getting into the low to mid 40s.

Wednesday night into Thursday we should pick up some rain with milder air blowing in on a gusty southwest wind. Temperatures will rise Wednesday night & continue to rise well into the 50s Thursday. The first of two cold fronts will blow through Thursday night with a few showers, followed by a reinforcing shot of colder air Friday with a few snow showers & squalls possible. Highs come Friday & over the weekend will drop back into the 30s, with a few snow showers & flurries possible this weekend too, but no significant snows are expected right into early next week at this time. Next Tuesday &/or Wednesday there will be a storm that MAY bring some snow/mix &/or rain. There will not be a lot of cold air in place, but possibly cold enough for snow & not rain. Snow lovers & those who want a White Christmas, I believe most, keep your fingers crossed for at least a little winter white by Christmas. There are signs of it being at least a little colder with maybe even a little snow & lake snow heading into Christmas weekend, but this is still a long ways out, so don't get too excited yet. Stay tuned.

  1. There will be a storm right around Christmas. The question is are we going to be in the favorable track or is it going to our east. I believe we need to watch this time frame just my opinion take it for what it is worth.

  2. I will not keep my hopes up at all, but want a White Christmas. Maybe something can be salvaged out of this snowless December.

  3. Andrew, I agree! Next week does look interesting, and even if a storm goes to our east, it could still possibly pull down some cold air over the unusually warm lake waters. We still have some hope for a white Christmas. I give us a 3/10 chance on the News 8 scale, but hopefully that number goes up as the week progresses!

  4. This has been soooo nice. Went for a long, COMFORTABLE, walk today. Very pleasant unlike usual misery at this time of year. No grass to cut, no leaves to rake, no snow to shovel--this is great!!!
NWS says above ave temps to first of year!!! Keep it coming.

  5. Anonymous, why do you live in Rochester if you do not like snow? Just asking.

  6. I'll never understand how someone can look at snow falling, and watch it collect on the grass and trees, and not think to themselves how beautiful it is. Yes, like many things in life, there are down sides to it. But we are blessed to experience this natural phenomenon of snow falling. People who see snow for the first time as adults are amazed and find it surreal. We get to see it every year. It's an amazing thing that we should appreciate, at least a little bit, in my humble opinion.

  7. SnowFan - If it was possible, I would "like" your comment.

  8. I agree Snowfan. Snow is beautiful and MOST people that live up here like snow. I would rather see snow on the ground than look at brown grass anytime.

  9. Anonymous likes to pop in and agitate the snow lovers...unfortunately he/she has had a lot of iopportunities this year.

  10. You realize that even if we get below normal and get 70 inches of snow that is still more then most of the US gets in 2-3 years combined.

I am glad that we have not had snow because on November 9th we had a house fire and they have to rebuild the entire house so if we can keep this warmth up they can get going on our house soon.

  11. I see 2 storms next week and both look to cut to our West. Not good, but expected.

  12. Sorry to read that, Charles. Glad everybody is safe. Best of luck to you and your family!

  13. yeah everyone is safe but I am glad that we have not had snow... I do not foresee January being as snowless as December was.... I think we will have a blockbuster storm this year with 2-3 ft of snow

  14. Glad to hear that Charles! And weatherdan, how do you see Tuesdays low going west of us!?

because 35 years ago there WAS a company called Kodak that paid really, really well and offered a great career. Sort of tough to find --I mean 35 years ago, fresh out of college.
Have not enjoyed the miserable climate around here. 9 months of crap. But I will admit the summers can be the best in the country--even fall can be pleasant.
Once you have 35 years of roots it can be difficult to leave--I would if it wasn't for said roots.
I will continue to be the voice of the 99% who really have no need for the inconvenience caused by the type of continuous never ending snow we have around here.
    Think warm folks!!!! Rain!!!!!

  16. Scott, you showed a correlation between warmest Novembers and less than average winter snowfall, what about warm Novembers AND Decembers?
And while there are those that are anxiously awaiting "the big storm", I fear we are going to pay for all this mildness with a lot of lake effect...

  17. I am going to stick with the old fashion way. The Farmers Almanac says, "If there is Thunder in the Fall, no snow in the Winter." Remember that Thunderstorm last month?

Actually, the NWS is forecasting a slight chance of Thunderstorms for tomorrow morning.

  18. Anonymous,
Seems you have a pretty negative outlook on this region. You say our weather is 9 months of crap. By my estimate you're within a few years of 60 and you've spent 3/4 of your life, or nearly 45 years living in crap as you call it. That is simply sad.

Seems you need to learn to live where you live, and enjoy the beauty of nature regardless of season. Or move away to a climate more fitting and stop wasting your life.

  19. Personnally, I think we live in the best arear of te country, We never have to worry about Hurricanes, Tornados, Earthquakes, fires, drought, mudslides. Each and every season is beautiful up here. Yes, in certain times we have cloudy and dreary weather, but so does everyone else. I have come to appreciate every season living in Rochester. if you do not like it, no-one is keeping you here. We all have choices.

  20. I agree with you weatherdan. This area gets such a needless bad wrap from the media and complainers that make a big deal out of 100"+ of snow. First time winter visitors often expect to see feet of snow on the ground all the time, and are surprised when they don't.

Even when we have storms they are only an inconvenience for a short time. In all my years (over 40)in ROC,I don't ever recall a storm keeping me trapped in my home for more than 24 hours. We can dig our way out of anything we've had thrown at us in a fairly modest period.

The Rochester region is a very livable area (far better than most), especially if you learn how to enjoy the seasons.

  21. I agree, weatherdan. If you travel through the Finger Lakes in the winter, it looks just as beautiful as Californias Napa Valley. How about those warm, hazy sunets on lake Ontario during the summer. We live in a gorgeous area, filled with lakes, rivers, rolling hills, flat lands, cities, small villages, beautiful farmland and countryside. I wouldn't choose another area for anything.
