Colder, but Pretty Uneventful Still

Written by John DiPasquale:

Thank you for the picture Heidi Vogt of Brockport for the great wintry shot this past Monday. Something we have not seen much of this winter, that's for sure! Well, for what it's worth, which is not much, but Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow early this morning. Legend has it, that if this infamous groundhog sees his shadow that there will be at least 6 more weeks of winter. I actually buy that this year, since we haven't really had much winter weather here in the Northeast thus far. Plus, the last few winters have ended early with mild temperatures & not much snow in March. We are due for a snowier & colder than average March. We'll see.

Today will be pretty benign with just a touch of lake effect flurries/light snow at times under the chilly northerly flow. A few more snow showers & flurries should fall later Friday into early Friday night with a little cold front sneaking through, & then again late Saturday night into Super Bowl Sunday morning with another slightly stronger cold front. Little, if any, accumulation is expected from these features, though. Temperatures will range from the upper 20s to mid 30s today through the weekend for daytime highs, which is more typical for this time of year unlike the last couple of days prior to today when spring was in the air.

Bottom line, no significant snows or big cold through the start of next week anyways. Still looks like an overall colder pattern evolving late next week & beyond, as ridge across the North Atlantic begins to try to establish itself. We'll see.

  1. Wait to late next week then we will be told wait to late next week the song goes on and on and on. The pattern is not switching so lets move on to spring.

  2. For the sake of discussion, let's say there is a pattern change in the near future. We have no snow cover. There is little to no snow cover north of us. That means any cold air coming in will moderate, at least slightly, right? We are gaining daylight, the sun angle is higher each day, and we're hitting the time when the historical average daytime temp is increasing (slowly, but increasing just the same). With all those factors, if winter does decide to arrive in mid-Feb, what are the odds of it holding on for very long?

    1. I totally agree! If and when it does get cold and snow, it will not last. The coldest part of the season is behind us.

    2. Hopefully, not very good.

  4. it's NEVER going to happen Weatherdan, and if it does I bet we get no snow....highly disappointing winter season, let's move on to the next!

  5. NO ONE IS NOW MENTIONING THE PATTERN CHANGE AND COLD LATE NEXT WEEK. IT IS DONE TIME TO MOVE ON LIKE GINGER SAID.

  6. Scott does not even comment on the blog anymore that is how bad it has been and how bad it will be in the future.

  7. From the NWS:

LOOKING AHEAD...BOTH THE GFS/EUROPEAN HAVE ARCTIC AIR ON OUR
DOORSTEP LATE NEXT WEEK. WHILE IT APPEARS TEMPERATURES MAY BE
MARKEDLY COOLER FOR A FEW DAYS...THOUGH THE COLD AIR MAY ONLY MAKE A
    BRIEF APPEARANCE IN THE REGION.

  8. Sorry I haven't commented much here lately. Nothing worth talking about with regard to our weather. There is plenty of cold air over Siberia, Northern Europe and Alaska. We just can't get a sustained blocking pattern to bring it South. A polar vortex really wants to develop next weekend over Eastern Canada but it cannot sustain itself alone. There's no blocking over Greenland to help out.

  9. Scott, in your mind, do you think this is our last chance of getting sustained cold? And in all honesty, have you ever seen a pattern this stubborn before? I feel like this is unprecedented!

  10. TO US SNOWLOVERS, READ AND WEEP: BIG SNOWSTORM GOING ON IN COLORADO. WE CAN ONLY DREAM OF THIS.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 12 TO 22 INCHES
CAN BE EXPECTED ALONG THE FRONT RANGE URBAN CORRIDOR. CLOSER
TO THE WYOMING BORDER ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM 6 TO 10
    INCHES.

  11. Wow that is truly amazing! I personally can't believe that somewhere in our country is getting a snowstorm.
Astonishing news Weatherdan! Your posts on this blog are very tiresome.....

  12. And to you Anonymous, your constant bashing of people on this blog is VERY tiresome.

  13. I agree Weatherdan, anonymous.......find something else to do........
@ weatherdan, I have a friend that lives in Denver and was pretty excited last night for this snowstorm. I wish we could get one like this! But time is dwindling. What do you think this pattern will lead to in terms of our late spring and summer? Will it favor higher temps or lower temps?

  14. I know it's been wait for next week for 3 months now. But it's starting to look like something might be brewing for our half of the country late next week. I won't fall victim to hope until next Thursday..but I thought I'd mention it.

  15. With temps in the mid to upper 30's right through next weekend not much can happen. The NWS even states that even if we get cold by the end of next weekend it will only last a few days and then it is back to above normal temps. I think winter is done. 25" inches of snow so far. How pathetic. Channel 8 keeps upping their temps every day. The pattern change is just not going to happen. I have never seen anythng like this before.

  16. This pattern really is unreal, but we can at least hold onto hope of a snowstorm or two towards the end of Feb. and March. Until then, its gonna be tough to look at the forecast for a while....

  17. It is just so bad and the latest data looks worse for anything coming in the near future. Really an amazing winter of nothing but false hope for cold and snow.

  19. Pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training soon. Maybe it'll look like spring around here when they start in AZ and FL instead of the usual hip deep snow.
I still say we are going to get it sometime in March.
Least snow for a season in Roch is 29". Would be nice to break that but I really don't think so.
    Anyway, so far so good.

  20. It is really bad there is nothing showing for at least the next two weeks. This has been an amazing winter for cold and snow ineptitude. Sorry to those who love outside winter activities and those who make a living from the snow.
